Mar 27 Social Instagram Greg Reading the Cabin Log at Gale Passage Intersection of Gale Passage and Seaforth Channel, BC 52 06’05”N 128 23’20”W Every cabin on the coast has a cabin log where visitors document their comings and goings, their experiences, their hopes and wishes, etc. Sometimes these logs are actual books but are often a collection of dated scraps of paper kept dry in zip-lock bags. Reading them can be a voyeuristic exercise involving the Who’s Who of coastal water travel, recognizing names of friends and acquaintances who passed before you or reading some paddler’s Hunter S. Thompson-inspired interpretation of their outdoor adventure and philosophy of life. They are always entertaining. This particular cabin stands on Heiltsuk land and, like a few others in their Traditional Territory, was built for Band use but is open for others seeking shelter. Heiltsuk cabins contain bunks, counters for cooking, a table for eating and a wood stove in some state of disrepair. The forest surrounding this cabin is full of Culturally Modified Trees and a fairly reliable water source empties into Gale Passage behind the cabin. That stream is key because fresh water becomes an issue south of Seaforth Channel. To read some examples from one of the best cabin logs on the BC Coast read excerpts from Randy Washburne’s Burnett Bay “Enchanted Cabin” Log. Mar 15 Social Instagram Looking across Caamano Sound to Princess Royal Island Rennison Island, BC 52 50’59”N 129 20’38”W Located off the northern tip of Aristazabal, Rennison Island is a bit off the beaten path. The evening’s tide was going to come right up to the forest so everything had to be up off of the beach. We found a spot in the forest north of the beach where we could hack clearings out for our three tents. No room for boats so we cleared another narrow slot 140 meters away from camp where we piled our boats up into the forest and tied them to trees. Surely nobody had ever set foot on the clearing I had made for my tent. And then I looked up and noticed that the ancient Cedar that towered over my tent had been culturally modified. Hundreds of years ago a Kitasoo Xai’Xais band member had landed on this beach in his dugout canoe and chopped a section out near the base of the tree. Once he had widened the cut sufficiently, he split a single 40’ long plank from the tree to be used as siding or roofing material and towed it back to his village. He pulled the cedar bark from the plank and rolled it up to keep it dry and salt-free. He extended the base of the cut for a few inches on each side of the scar left by the harvested plank and pulled more long bark strips that he knew that the tree would bear. Throughout this remote coast are signs of occupation going back time out of mind. Responsible resource management evidenced by trees that gave up planks and bark hundreds of years ago live on. The villages that they helped build may have been taken over by the rainforest but the giants still stand tall. Contributors and signs of previous ownership. #REIEmployee, #OptOutside, #3meterswell, #BellaBella2PrinceRupert2015, #BCOuterCoast, #WildernessSystems, #Tempest170Pro, #Kokatat, #WernerPaddles, #MountainHouse, #PeakSherpa, #HammerGel, #PROBAR, #BCMarineTrails, #TheWildCoast, #TheWildCoast2, #WildCoastMagazine, #PacificWild, #BCFerries, #RennisonIsland, #AristazabalIsland, #CaamanoSound, #LaredoChannel, #CampaniaSound, #PrincessRoyalIsland, #CMT, #CulturallyModifiedTree, #KitasooXaiXaisTraditionalTerritory, #littleboatbigtide

Mar 8 Social Instagram Overcast Afternoon at Wolf Beach I was wakened by the words of a Raven from the top of the trees bordering the west end of the beach. Then, a response from the opposite side of my tent. Again, the tree Raven klocked and whistled and was answered by the Raven outside my door. They chattered back and forth for quite some time and finally I unzipped the tent to find the bird on a log just 5 feet away. He looked at me and then at my PFD that I had left on the log. No food in it so I wasn’t concerned. Mostly I was pleased that he was so close to me and not showing any fear. The two birds talked a bit more while I watched and then the bird on the log flew away. After eating breakfast and packing my boat I was doing my “pre-flight”. Checking that everything was where it should be, as it should be Hatch covers secured, drysuit zippers zipped and suit burped, flares zipped inside the left shoulder pocket, Spot turned on, sending signals, secured to its tether and zipped inside the right shoulder pocket, PFD donned, buckles snapped and zipped closed, Hammer Gel jug full and zipped into the left pocket with a ProBar, EPIRB, and Protein Bar zipped into the right pocket, VHF radio secured to its tether, radio check by accessing weather frequency and buckled into its pocket and WTF? The rubber antennae covering was frayed and the metal spring exposed! That Raven had been chewing on my antennae and had eaten the rubber off the end of it! Bon appetite. Just one more use for duct tape. 51 40'02'N 128 07'13.7'W #REIEmployee, #OptOutside, #3meterswell, #Klemtu2PortHardy2017, , #WildernessSystems, #Tempest170Pro, #Kokatat, #WernerPaddles, #MountainHouse, #PeakSherpa, #HammerGel, #PROBAR, #BCMarineTrails, #TheWildCoast, #TheWildCoast2, #WildCoastMagazine, #PacificWild, #BCFerries, #HakaiLuxvbalis, #CalvertIsland, #ChokedPassage, #WolfBeach, #WuikinuxvTerritorialWaters, #HakaiInstitute, #littleboatbigtide

Feb 28 Social Instagram Sometimes you just get lucky and end up in the right place at the right time. I was on a solo mission from Klemtu to Port Hardy and I stumbled upon this crew in Rescue Bay. They were 52 days out of Juneau on their way to, wait for it, Tierra del Fuego. They were life-long friends and four of them were sitting around at a party trying to decide what to do before life got serious. They decided to ride their bikes from Juneau to Tierra del Fuego. Why not? They announced their plan and other friends signed on. One of them suggested that they paddle the Inside Passage to near-Nanaimo and ride from there instead. Deal done. Seaward Kayaks provided boats, local vendors provided gear and Indigenous Communities provided knowledge and inspiration. Three of them completed the trip. Google atripsouth and take a look.
