I have one. It's actually quite light and comfortable with good coverage.

I was told that the overlapping layers for the shell are to help dissapate the energy of an impact instead of just relying on the foam to do the work.

Why would you want a face guard on a river they are the most dangerous thing to have on a helmet! they can get snagged under water on lots of things etc more hassle then they are worth!

Gath however do retractable visors which can keep the sun out and offer some face protection if you really need it?

I have heard that before from others. The more I hear it the more it seems that it is a regional personal opinion. In some places visors are treated like the plague. If you use the shred ready Lektor Prokector the chin guard can pull off under tremendous load so no problem. I know a bunch of creekers who thought the same about full face till they used the bottom like a cheese grater. Then the switched to a full face and have never had it catch in many years.

Here is the shred ready helmet www.shredready.com/products/lektor.htm

There have been many issues with full face helmets/ chin bars etc around europe entrapping people and killing them yes the lektor is a step in the right direction but even so I still wouldnt wear one Shred dont fit my head at all which is a shame as I like their helmets. Personally its up to you and if you want to wear the extra heavy full facers thats fine as it is your personal opinion!

Have fun now lets go paddling
