Hand rolling is great to help you learn good form. But don't forget a little wax on the paddle can really help you from loosing your paddle. I like to use Sexwax. I use cold water and warm water wax depending on the temp.

I think doing the handroll in a pool and in the river are two totally different things. So I suggest after you have managed to handroll in the pool, with all the setting up and stuff, you should play games with your friends using no paddles and a lot of pushing each other. I play a version of polo which is usually more violence and less sport, using no paddles. There you have to handroll once in a while, when you are tired and not ready.

But another thing that I fear a little bit on the river, and I am curious about how others feel about this. I feel that my face is exposed during hand rolling. This is the main reason I usually dont try to handroll unless I know Im in a very safe place.

To help develop your reflexes rolling in unexpected circumstances I always suggest go play canoe polo. In canoe polo you get a lot of rolling practice (unless you stay away from the ball but that sort of puts you out of the game ;) ) because people can push you over if you're in possession.

The good part is that with paddles you also practice bracing and rolling with your paddle (as opposed to just handrolling).

Besides, it's fun too, especially if you can't go out on a river.

I agreee. When you roll with your paddle, your leaning forward to start, and your head is on your deck. Generally if I take a hit, it's on the back of my lifejacket. As you start to roll, you can kind of protect your face with the shaft if needed.

When you hand roll, you come up on the back deck more than you generally would, because you really have to lean back a bit to make the roll easier, and you really have to do a quick hard hip flick and roll to get up. You have no time to stop and protect your face.
