Broken paddle blades 18 years 5 months ago #10919

Is it possible or practical to replace a broken blade of a damaged paddle and how would you go about repairing it. Thank you for any comments

before anybody will answer this, i'm sure they'll want to know what the blades are made of... plastic, aluminum, wood, carbon, glass? That might make a difference :)

And we would like to know where it is damaged and how :)

Oh, and don't forget to tell us what the shaft is made of.

A manufacturer could be useful aswell! Ie if its a lendal paddle then you can rplace the blade by carefully heating up the joint between the shaft and the blade whilst turning the paddle so the heat is not in one spot for too long eventually the blade will start spinning and you will be able to pull it off.

MAKESURE you put some masking tape around the shaft before you start and mark the feather of your paddle or experiment with a new feather by using masking tape

you will have to clean the old glue off and rough up the service get a new blade/s and mix up some araldyte or similar use a lil sand in the mixture and replace the blade then let it set keeping the blade in right position and not letting it move from your desired feather

It is worth taking your time do not rush especially with the heat gun as it can damage your shaft! Also you should take into account if you are replacing one or both blades what would the difference in price be compaired to a new paddle! It may be more economical to buy a whole new paddle but that is for you to decide

Good Luck

Is the blade mounted onto the shaft or does the shaft run into the blade?

If it's the latter then it will be hard to replace it (and I doubt if you could actually buy replacement blades), if it's the former either using a heat gun should do the trick or, if it does not work:

saw off the blade where the shaft ends. In the shaft is now a peg glued that you can remove by using an electric drill and a few sizes of flat wooddrills (the big ones, say 16 mm and up. I mean this type click here). Basically start with a small size and work your way up to hollow out the peg. End with a rounded rasp to remove all leftovers.

BTW: if the blade goes into the shaft and you can buy a similar type of blade with peg mouting it's also easy: just saw off the lbroken blade and glue the new blade back on with Araldite or something. The best kind of glue is the slow hardening variety, this is a bit stronger than the quick drying one.
