i think it is a great idea...not necesarily for new tricks but just to make it to the next rapid, or shorten the paddle out/in...

also i guess you could have the ultimate boof and jsut fly over anything...hehe

but to be more serious, i guess there will be a lot of environmental problems, cost, heat (as mentioned)...

so as usual, there will be a couple of photos showing people the impossible done and no one knew they had an engine in the back...good for stunts/tv...hollywood i guess is calling for flying kayaks in the near future...

A big bullshit I think!! Why don't put wheels also? so we don't need water... and what about a remote control, so we can stay comfy in our armchair while the boat can play for us...
All this can seems cool but is the negation of paddling and kayaking spirit.

I think tis a great idea. Not ALL inventions and ideas need to be marketable, or even pratical outside of a single goal. Somtimes, its worth working on a special project like this just to see what the possibilites are. If you can get someone else to pay for it, then run with it and see what it brings.

its like my Hydro Foil... jsut how marketable is it? Maybe a little, maybe a lot, maybe none. Who cares... the idea itself is worth exploring just to explore it and seee what possibilities it brings.

In this reguard, I think Shauns toy is cool. It may work, it pay not. It may do absolutely nothing, in which case what we learned was... nothing (because either it does nothing because it wasn;t done right, or because it simply doesn;t work, and auntil you try to do it another way, you don;t know which it is). But it may do a few cool things. It could be a lot of fun to zoom around rapids. Maybe a back-flip is in store. Maybe a waterfall run? Who knows.

Practical to average paddler... heck no. But so what? You think people building carbon fiber cars that get 1600 miles to the gallon has any application to average drivers in the near future? Of course not... but if people don;t push boundaries... even absurd ones, then we'll stay stagnent forever.

The nay sayers of things like the Hydro Foila nd this jet Kayak are the same people we're talking about here (evanmonk.com/dragorossi/index.php?showtopic=607). Human nature to resist and even degrade anything that is outside of thier personal established boundaries of the acceptable.

Take your hats off to Shaun.... wish him luck with the project.

i dont think hes trying to sell it, i think he just wants to see wht happens hell i sure do :P the amount of times ive said on long trips "damn i wish kayaks had outboard motors" :D Sounds crazy and fun. Only downside is how much controll can u have at 50mph?? i would have thought it cud b very dangerous... but nevermind i still wanna see wht happens :P

and how about airbags? if the deck implodes or you have to take a swim for some other reason, it looks like you need big airbags to not lose this heavy monster :ask:

i would think that if the deck imploded then the kayak would just turn into a submarine lol

i think its a preety sweet idea, and agree that it doesnt necessarily need to be marketable to be reaaly cool. However, woudnt the plastic get warm from the engine and soften or melt through the plastic?

well, as long as the aerials don't last too long, the whole plastic is water-cooled

Rumour has it he will be shoting some footage for Top Gear this spring. Jet Kayak vs. car.

This is to take place in my area and would be interesting to watch, too bad I´ll be away kayaking and will have to miss the whole spectacle.

The TV footage was shown last night (sunday 14 May) in the UK as part of Top Gear, a motoring programme. I missed the very start, so not sure where it was fimed (maybe Iceland?) Good for Red Bull, and it was entertaining, but not sure what it did for the sport of kayaking!

i was talking to my local kayak shop owner the other day and he was saying that the jet kayaks will soon be available on the market, the downside is that they will be retailing at £6500

apparently the rumours about the boat melting under you are just a myth as there is a carbon fibre plate on either side of the engine to make it resiliant to heat, the downside tho is that it has a two stroke engine which means a lot of maintenance
