Riot's Plastic 18 years 4 months ago #11548

I have a Riot Turbo 47 and i realy love my boat... I do like Riot's playboats but now that i want to get a new boat and, in Portugal and Spain there are lot's of paddlers saying that this brand has bad quality plastics and that Riot's boats are having problems, i am afraid about geting a Magnum and a Flair or Astro.
Someone can talk about this situation? I need information because in Portugal (my country) there are no dealers doing a good job with this brand.
Sorry for my bad english...

Meh, most kayak companies use the same plastic at this stage. I have an Air, it's pretty old, and does scrape easily, but only cosmetic problems, have no deep scratches on it. The Magnum would have thicker plastic anyway. I wouldn't worry about it too much, go with a boat you like!

I was working with Riot years ago when they did have a plastic problem with their creek boats. It was a quality control issue and not so much a plastic type of thing. But, this has been corrected a long time ago and they do use pretty much the same plastic and molding technique as most other people.
Those of us who went along with Corran did so because of design (of course) but also because DR is using some plastic that is a little more dense and tough. But it's probably just a paranoia from having gone through the Riot thing years agao.
I think that you'll be happy with any of the boats you are considering here.

I purchased a Riot Magnum 6 months ago and as far as im concernd its the best creek boat on the market. Ive paddled in recent years Tecknos, Snipers, Boosters etc (as ull probebly guess i love riot) The plastic as it stands is fine, i think its slightly lighter than the alternative brands but its caused me no grumbles.

For an all round package the magnum is great, you can just jump in and bugger off!!!!
I completely agree with scott in that there seem to be an issue still hanging around from years ago. :roflol:

I recently bought a second hand Astro and the plastic seems to be in par with other manufactures. However, the bottom of the boat was oil-canned and it's because the seat doesn't give sufficient support to the hull. I removed the seat and put some foam under it in critical places and now the seat connects the hull properly giving enough support to keep the hull nice and flat.

Otherwise the Riot Unity seat in quite comfortable to sit in... Hopefully they sort out the structural integrity problems with it.

hi there.
i think all paddles should put foam underneath the seat of their kayaks. i paddle a fluid flirt and saw that the seat is scratching my hull. on the older outfitting of the flirts the seating sort of dented the hull a bit, and foam fixed the problem.
make the effort and put foam underneath your seat, i do think it strenghtens your hull a bit.
cheers

The seat is scratching the hull because it's in contact with it. It's a good thing. Add foam to fill the gaps where the seat is not connecting the hull.

Scott is correct. In the past, there were problems with the riot plastic. I think it was the xytec plastic or whatever it as called. Either way, the problem is fixed and the plastic is on par with any of the other companies. I do, however, recommend throwing some foam under the seat to prevent oil canning. I've had to do that to most of the boats I've had, riot and many other companies.

You definitely can't go wrong with the magnum. I really can honestly say its the best creek boat I've ever paddled. The big gun... not so much. But I really think you'll be impressed with the magnum. Also, if you're looking at an Astro, and weigh over 160, I would recommed the 58 over the 54. For me, its looser, faster, and loops a lot bigger.

Good luck

I'm not sure about their creekers, but as far as playboats go, their plastic isn't very durable, so they compensate by making it really thick, which helps, although this makes them really heavy, and they oil- can pretty badly anyway.
