How to put a booat on a bike. 18 years 4 months ago #11549

I was wondering how I can put a kayak on my bike. Ay websites, ideas, kits or any thing that would help me figure this out.

I don't know specifically how to do it, but it looks like this worked with some bungee cords and a saddlebag. www.wavesport.com/Kayaks.php

I think I remember Eric Jackson saying something about using a bike to get boats from his house to the Rock Island put in, also if you want to ask him...

I've seen a few of those bikes ( I work in Berkeley Ca. where a lot of folks don't own cars ) This bike is kinda the SUV of bikes, It has a very long wheel base and large frame for tying stuff to over the rear wheel. I don't think you could tie a kayak onto a regular bike like that. I've seen a picture of surf boards tied to motor cycles. They welded racks to the side so the board was out past your leg. I assume the offset weight would make you go down the road leaning to one side.
If you figure it out post a picture.

Hi,
There are some bikes already modified to carry small boats “playboats” however, if the boat will be relatively bigger than 2m, the ideal is to create your proper system of transportation.
I live about 4 Kms away from the beach and when I decide to make kayaksurf with my Riot Turbo, the solution to carry it in a bicycle includes to buy a transport car of 2 large wheels, to arrest very well the kayak and use the front hand handle of the boat as a union point to the bicycle using a strong rope. To be easier to maneuver the bicycle, the ideal is to put the nose of the boat in the “behind guard wheels” of the bike. In my opinion, it is not the ideal system but it has resulted and it doesn’t cost much money.

P.S.: If you'll need more specifications, try to contact me by email and i think i will be able to make a sketch of the sistem or maybe take a picture of it with my old bike.

i'm building a trailer too. check out this websites:

greenboof.kayakblogs.com/index.php?2006/...-boofin-the-sidewalk

www.instructables.com/id/EYPT82823UES17688X/?ALLSTEPS

you can buy one of the above trailer but it is cheaper and more fun to design your own trailer. I think the key to trailer design is to have the boat sit as low of center of gravity as possible. Since high center of gravity design will cause speed wobbling when you get high enough speed and might tip over in a tight corner. i'm using bmx wheels that i already have and usually you can get it for free in a trash can. also couple design above doesn't require for you to weld so it is good for people who don't know or don't have welding equipment(like me). i will post a pic of the trailer in a few days.

ive seen a converted baby carriage attachment type thing be used to carry a redline, which is a pretty big kayak. this might be a bad idea, but you could always try and rig up a backpack system
