Skookumchuck 18 years 4 months ago #11572

hey, im a paddler that lives about 12 to 18 hours away from skookunchuck( I think). Id like to go up there this summer and have a go at it, but im worried about safety stuff. im a verry solid intermediate paddler, and would go up with probably tow or three other paddlers of the same skill. how hard is the class four rapid behind skookumchuck? Woulld it be a reasonable thing for me to do?

You'll be fine if you have a very solid roll and can paddle III+/IV bigwater. I might be interested in joining, I'm on the oregon/cali border. Drop a word when the time comes, been once before.

skook is to die for. You will love it. Auto air!! The rapids behind it have huge whirpools and four foot high boils...no joke. If you miss the eddy (which is very possible) you just have to accept it and paddle out to the other side of the river to avoid the serious mess.

we'll lemme say I got really lucky : ) I happened to be in vancouver for a wedding. Skook just happend to be running. I had my boat in saskatchewan for the summer and I flew with it out to van. It was 2 days after my birthday, so I convinced our friends out there to drive with me for 3 hours to skook. It was an epic trip. (1 overnight) The sunshine coast is so beautiful. I love BC. I can't wait to get back to bC. Maybe... I could figure out some way to get there. Ohh....it's the best playspot I've ever been. It didn't give up the best air, but it was incredible. seeing a 12 foor wave that is completly glassy form from flatwater. Every ride was different/

The 'tour' behind skooks is nasty... 3+/4 BIG WATER boils and such. Lots of carnage stories, a definitely NO SWIM location.
That said, it's the price one has to pay to surf the perfect glass...
ON ANOTHER NOTE:
issues of damage to the environment due to #'s of paddlers has been raised by parks.
Please refer to whitewater.org/news/skookumchuk.htm

BE RESPECTFUL
Mother Nature can be a B*tch back (and send you on the tour!)...

Hi, Skooks is a great wave! Very stable, and smooth. It's not enormously bouncy compared to other big waves like Hawaii-sur-rhone, but you can fly when you want. If you have a solid roll you can surf there. The good thing about Skooks is that it starts small, so you can grow with the wave.

It's true that it's a bit \"wobbly\" behind the wave. But swimming is not a disaster. I've heard horror stories but seen people take a swim, getting pulled out (which will cost you a couple of beers, because it is a loooong way to shore against boils and all that), get in their boat, and surf again. My deck popped once (yea yea :P) but I had no bad experience whatsoever. Just make sure their are people watching you.

cheers and have fun :)
