Galicia and Northern Portugal 18 years 4 months ago #11720

Anyone know where I might get some information on boating in Galicia and Northern Portugal? We're heading that way from Jan 2 - 13, we have the maps, we've got the two guidebooks, we've made contact with the pagayak guys, we've read everything on this board (still waiting for those promised trips reports!), we've hired the cars, we've booked the flights. We intend to fly into Porto and paddle in the 'box' bounded to the south by Porto, to the north by Santiago de Compostela, and to the east by Chaves.

So where to stay? What town is a good base or should we move around? What is the accomodation situation - hostels? Is it too cold to camp? Where can we get water level reports? What are good indicators ahead of time if there will be enough water? Any 'must-do' rivers? Any 'must-miss' rivers?

So many, many questions. Here's a few more:

Are the Galicians really, really mad? Is Cannavaro really the best player in the world this year? Is Santa real?

Thanks,
Jim.

Hi guys ...
As soon as you arrive in Porto talk to Pagayak you can´t go wrong there .. you will easely find places to sleep, there are alot of cheap hostels and most of the rivers are nearby

So where to stay? - Hostels

What town is a good base or should we move around? - in a town called Melgaço (pagayak base) near the playspots

What is the accomodation situation - hostels? plenty and afordable there are lots of camping places but some are open only in the summer !

Is it too cold to camp? YES for me , i'm not used to less then 15C

Where can we get water level reports? Pagayak; Teixugos ; call and ask thats what we do ..

What are good indicators ahead of time if there will be enough water? Rain previews.... the water levels are ok for now !

Any 'must-do' rivers? plenty .. all the ones in the \"dessert\" session of Calado's book \"PORTUGAL KAYAK\" ... Cávado;Castro;Mouro; Vez;Peneda;Sagres;Superbock ...... etc.etc

Any 'must-miss' rivers? The Douro ... its realy Hardcore stuff ;)

Take care
