Just interested in what people use to keep their heads warm whilst on the water at this time of year in Britain. I use a nookie skull cap, but still suffer as did most people last time we went playboating, ive never heard such language...
Cheers, Dolly!
(p.s. please no posts by those lucky people who have warm water...im jelous enough as it is!)

I use a 1mm thick neoprene hood I bought from NRS. The hood has a titanium heat reflecting liner with microfleece fiber. The neoprene is 1mm thick so it's nice and flexible. It works great with my Stohquist drysuit. The drysuit has a neoprene sheath around the neck and shoulders. I put the hood over the rubber gaskete and under the neoprene sheath. I stay warm as I don't loose much heat from my head or neck. This works very well for me. That's about it!

I just went paddling last week in -2.77 degrees C (28 degrees F) weather, with ice chunks floating down. We had too yell at each other when we saw ice to avoid getting mangled, quite fun really!

Just wearing a skull cap works for me. I have a nookie one too. its pretty flimsy tho! i would advise not wearing any gloves - if your hands are cold it helps distract from your head!

Grow a burly beard. Paddling is one of the best excuses to do so.

I've used all sorts of skull caps, neoprene and fuzzy fleece. The biggest problem is that flush of fresh cold water that sneaks inside the cap. So my solution has been to find one hat fits tight enough to minimize this fresh water flush, but make sure it's not so tight that it gives me a headache before I get on the water.

A latex swim cap underneath everything really does help alot. It turns your hair into a bit of an insulator and keeps things a bit drier. It does not work alone in the middle of winter, but under a skull cap it is a dream.

I have met a few people here in New England who have \"winter\" helmets that are a size larger so that they can fit their full 5mm dive/survival hood underneath. I have yet to try that, but it seems like a good strategy to me.

put some vaseline on your face, it's a tinny barrier from cold water on your face and i prefer mitss over gloves

I think this is the apparel whitewater suggested and I have the same. Keeps my head pretty warm even in the coldest days:

I have a shred ready shaggy with ear flaps the combination of a nice snug fit so very little water gets in and no holes in the shell to let heat out and water in means I no longer need to wear a scull cap. I used to wear a playboater earwig, which worked quite well.
