New Zealand Paddling 18 years 3 months ago #12033

So I'm about to be in New Zealand for a month, having never been there before, but having heard some very good things about the paddling there. I'm wondering if there's anywhere specific that's better than the rest (objective opinion, we all love our backyard run best, I know). At this point my plan is to find paddling shops, and ask about local paddling clubs, and go from there trying to hook up with other boaters who can show me the rivers and lend me gear, in return for money or beer or whatnot.

Anyone with a good starting place (I've got one mate near Rotorua that I'm trying to contact, but that's it) or club, please let me know. I've been rummaging the internet a bit, but am finding it hard to judge a place just from the pictures, as per normal.

thanks

Most of the great runs are in the west coast of south island. We will be heading there shortly. Best bet is to get to Murchison from Christchurch where you could get some good paddling info from the NZ Kayak School. Local knowledge will be very important as there are lot of changes to the rivers. I heard that lower Hokitika has changed due to an earth quake and has pushed the river grade or unpaddlable. This suppose to be a intermediate run previously.

Good luck!

Most of the best paddling is in the South Island. Having said that, Rotorua's not a bad place to start as you're right next to the Kaituna(Grade 4) and the Wairoa(Grade 5) isn't too far away. If you want something a bit gentler and more scenic, the Rangitaiki (just south of Rotorua) has a nice grade 3 run.
