finding the kayak mojo 18 years 3 months ago #12237

I have been paddling for less than one year, with my son. He uses a bliss stick blast and I have a Necky Chronic and a Dagger RPM. We are outfited for WW and have kayaked class 1-3 rapids in the WV Harpersferry area. I have been using the necky and enjoy its quick response and it's manuverability. I want to learn to roll and have been told the RPM is better to learn with. I took the RPM down to the water and as I paddle it feels wobley. It was kinda scary.
How do I get that stability and eliminate the fear factor? Since it is getting colder it is rougher to have to wet exit. I use cold weather gear but swimming is not as fun when I have to guide a kayak and paddle to the bank.

hey mate
practice rolling in a swimming pool. don't endanger your and those around you if you are not happy with your roll. question about the wobbly thing, might be that you need to outfit your boat a bit better so that you are not that loose in your boat. might be that you just need to spend a bit more time in your kayak.
enjoy

I will spend more time today in the RPM. I hope it becomes easier soon. Then I can start to learn some tricks. Thanks for the response.

i also find the rpm to be wobbly this is because of the rounded hull shape. i get used to it after a while though. i also agree about learning to roll in a pool but flat water would also be suitable. you may also be too big for the boat.

I have no idea how your boat is outfitted, but a snug fit is vital. It cannot be over emphasised enough that a good, comfortable boat is really important in boat control and therefore your overall enjoyment of the sport. If there is lots of foam on the seat already, it will raise your centre of gravity and you may feel the boat will be more unstable.

I personally raise the seats on all my boats. Thats a personal preference though. Experiment

If thats not the problem, it may just be that you're not used to paddling it. Lots of practise will go a long way. Keep paddling and have fun on the river!

The reason your RPM feels wobbly is because it has a displacement hull. This means that it has bad primary stability (when yuo are just flat on the water), but better secondary stability, (once you are on edge, it is easier to brace up). Your Chronic has a planing hull, meaning that it is flat on the bottom. This will give it good primary stability, but worse secondary stability. It might be a little easier to learn to roll in the RPM, but if I were you, I would try to learn in whichever boat I felt more comfortable in. (chronics are relatively easy to roll compared to some playboats).

I weigh 165 and am 5'2\" tall. I believe I am within the specs for the boat, though I am not in tune with it yet.

Thank you! I Started out in a rec boat ans surfed class two and three rapids. I did not know any better. Now I slice back and forth when I turn my head and am a little worried (OK, a lota worried).

Chronics are cool. i have one. I never had trouble transferring my roll from my previous boat (liquidlogic pop) to this, and thats quite a difference. You'll find that learning to roll in the most comfortable boat is easiest. If you're not happy in it the right way up its not gonna get any easier upside down!

The cronic is such a neat boat. I have adjusted the seat position to equalize the draft. I hope to get better at the roll business soon. The RPM seems more stable when I paddle deeply and towards the boat. I do not know why but when I dig in with the paddle and pull it twards me and back I do not wiggle as much.

Is there something to that type of stroke?

What stroke do you mean...? Are you talking about going forward...backwards...sideways?
