Fake 18 years 3 months ago #12273

Saw this video in the Video section, and thought i'd like to learn it.

For those who dont know what a fake is,

You paddle backwards, and take a forward stroke onto the stern, then back deck roll (dry roll if possible) all the way round and onto the stern again.

I can stern stall with ease and back deck roll, but i cant get the boat to come back up onto the stern after the roll. Perhaps its a similar technique as done in Zero to Hero?

Any help much appreciated,

Cheers,

Simon

Try to keep the pressure on the active blade so that you can still pull hard at the end. It helps if you have AT2

is it literally a stern stall, pulled over into a back deck roll, with a pull on the paddle so that the stern sinks on the way up?

(thanks for posting those sweet videos by the way, and making it look so easy!)

What a stupid comment. What you may mean is it helps if you have a paddle with a large power face but to say having a specific model of a specific brand helps is just ridiculous.

You got it. The difficult part for me was remembering to re initiate the stern because I'm so trained to finish a back deck roll sweeping and leaning aggressively forward.

When I first learned this I was coming up sweeping forward, like you said. What helped for me was to back deck roll half way up first, so that my boat edges were vertical and my paddle blade was out to the side. From that position, you just have to pull hard on the blade and sink your hips into the stern stall a la zero to hero. The less stern your boat has, obviously the easier this is...
