aqua bound blade 18 years 5 months ago #12651

Hi there playakers.
the other day i saw that 1 of my blades are sort of coming loose. My best guess is that they use heat to melt the glue that keeps the blade and shaft together. I tried to push the shaft of the blade back into the paddle shaft, but with no luck. i have a carbon fibre shaft and don't want to heat the shaft with a blow torch, i am afraid i might damage my paddle. Have any of you guys been in this situation before and how do i fix this?
thanx
Joe

forgot to mention that i don't leave my gear in the sun, so when i am not paddling it is out of direct sunlight. it does get like 40 + degrees c sometimes, so temperature in my garage will probably reach like 30 to 35 d c.
cheers

I spoke to a friend of mine just now and he said it might be that the air inside my paddle expand because of the heat. it then pushes the blade out. Sounds as if he has a point. I'll try to get in touch with AB and tell them bout my problem. Do any of you guys know some one to contact?
Or else i'll try there website.
Cheers

I do know of someone to contact since they are just down the road from my shop. Email me at work [mail address protected from spambots with javascript] and I will send you an email to use.

You can heat the shaft of an aquabound paddle you just have to be very careful. A guy in our manufacturing facility does it a few times a year although he is know for his slow tedious nature.

you might be able to just silicon it before it gets any worse, depending on how weak it already is.

I would heat it up a bit with a heat gun. Then try and pull the blade out as hard as you can. But using only your hands. Don't use any tools or anything. If it doesn't work use a little more heat. Be careful though. Don't use too much heat. It is possible that they have used hot glue to keep the blade on. The heat in Upington is very severe. I've been there a couple of times and there are only a few towns in SA where the tar melts... Perhaps the heat has affected the glue or whatever they're used. It's weird that it is kind of 'popping' the blade off.

If you manage to get it off, don't use hot glue to put the blade on. A lot of people use it but conditions are too hot and your blade will come off if you leave the paddle in the car. Even a hot day, you scout a rapid and when you come back the blade could have moved already. I've seen it happen. My old crank was joined in the centre with hot glue. It came loose about 20 minutes into a 42km overnight paddle... Luckily for duct tape. But was still annoying. Another person I know, in a rapid, the blade was all of a sudden rotating about the shaft.

I've used the Pratley Quickset clear glue. Works well, sets fairly quickly and doesn't have problems coming loose. One word of warning. It is pretty permanent. A friend who works at a kayak shop says that after about a year one can heat it carefully and remove the blade but it is dodgy. Most of the time it is very permanent. So if you break the shaft, you won't be able to salvage the blades. 8)

In the US, there is a product called J.B. Weld that is kind of like epoxy. I've used it on my paddle before, and it should work if you can find it. I've seen this stuff hold together cracked engine blocks, so heat shouldn't be an issue.
