How to keep a paddle from wearing down. 18 years 3 months ago #12665

I have a Werner Sidekick Carbon and I absolute love it. Great paddle. But I have noticed that it is starting to wear. I read some reviews and this seems to be a common problem, not just with Werners but all paddles. I was wondering if there was a way to protect the edges. I saw that AT paddles have a nylon (I think) guard around the edges. I was thinking I could use epoxy to help protect the edges. Would this work? I also saw a product on Colorado Kayak that is called Rim Rubber. Has anyone used this? It looks like it might be good. What is the best way to protect the edges from wearing? I am not looking to buy a new paddle, just protect my Sidekick.

I have seen a few types of edging material installed on the blades of Werner paddles but all looked really ugly. My friend has been using a carbon twist for a number of years and does not really have tonnes of wear on her blade. She normally paddles about twice a week year round. The only other blade that I have seen last at long is the Carbon Foam Core blade. The lady's husband has a foam core DD and it shows no signs of lost blade surface after about 5 years at about 4 times a week.

I would imagine that adding anything to the edges of a blade, that is thicker than the blade, would hinder it's performance. Maybe, maaaaybe you could add a thin later of some type of glue to the edges. How much this would help I don't know. Probably a waste of time. I wouldn't bother. :-) Paddles wearing down is just part of paddling.

Would duck tape work, its not that thick, you reckon the performance would be affected much?? the only thing i can think is that it won't be as smooth maybe? im not sure, my edges on my rough stuff fibreglass bladed paddle are starting to go, im just gona epoxy the holes and sand it down, although this idea of duck tape that ive just inquired about is intruiging me now.

A mate of mine had duct tape on his blades. Not sure what the purpose was. Probably to keep it together. :roflol: Maybe old riverscum will see this and have a laugh...

For my polo paddles (double dutch polo kinetics) I run kevlar boat edge/seam tape folded around the edge as they chip at the join. Works well and lasts a long time before needing to peel off and replace. Don't think it hinders performance of the blade as it sits about 1mm above the paddle surface.

duct tape doesn't work at all. it is weaker than your paddle blades, I put it on to play kayak polo to protect the people from the edges, not the other way around, After a couple hours on the river, it wears off at the edges,

Not using them is the best way :)

I also have Sidekicks and have had them for 6 years+. They are now quite worn and ready for replacement or made into splits. Not a bad lifespan for a paddle that has been totally hammered down rocky rivers for years. I wouldnt bother with duct tape etc as it wears off after 1 trip.
All blades wear down eventually, if you want them to last longer just look after them more. I have seen a set of Double Diamonds pretty worn down, a set with a blade that toally fell off and a set of Shogun Cranks with blades worn down to hand size after 18 months... its down to how you use them too.

Definately hanging them on the wall at home and looking at them will make them last a long long time.

I wouldn't go anywhere near the duck tape to protect your paddle it won't help and will make your paddle look horrible. Just try not to hit too many rocks with it!

Two of my buddies have paddles which are very worn down and they still paddle with them. Sentimental reasons I guess. I would just treat myself to a new paddle if I've been boating that much.

I've seen rim rubber before don't personally think it's worth the time & money.

I've just added some plastic door edging from an auto parts store to the edges of my player. From everything I've heard, it protects the edges almost indefinitely and the trade-off on performance is pretty much negligible. The only thing that I've heard that worries me a bit is that there's a greater probability of the edge hanging up on a rock. Check it out and see what you think.

I have found a fantastic way to keep your blades from wearing down, the only problem is that you folks in the USA might have an issue getting a hold of this type tape. Its designed to protect the toe and face of Cricket bats. And it is extremely durable as it is designed to withstand hard hits into the ground. I purchased it from a standard sports store.

What is the name of this cricket tape? I'd be willing to bet we could order it online here.

a Light rub down with fine grit paper to remove any nicks will make your blades last alot longer and keep them smooth so you dont end up getting fibreglass sharreds enbedded in yourself or friends. Just dont rub them too hardstroke it like your lady friend nice and gently:D

I put car door trim (available at auto parts stores) on the blades of all of my fiberglass and carbon paddles. The trim comes in black, clear, and I think I've even seen silver. I use the black trim on my carbon blades, and clear on my fiberglass blades. It's inexpensive, protects the blades, protects the rails of your craft, and protects your hands from getting sliced during a wipeout if your paddle gets ripped from your hands :stop:

Hi,
i would suggest to, sand down the end of the paddle so it is smooth.
next, put the strongest glue you can find and just dribble it all over the end and then don't use it untill it completley dry. this used for me. it will last about a month then do it again it will hopefully let you keep your paddle a bit longer, hope this is ok.
thanks, jack,
