As a complete novice, and having a brand new shiny Pyranha H3 sat in my garage waiting to see some water and after getting most of what I need, all Im left with choosing is my paddle. Im tempted to just get a Robson (stud or oracle) or Tywarp but dont know whether form rather than function is swaying me towards them. I could spend half what I would on either of them and get an Ainsworth K100 or similar. Most of my paddling will be on flat water at first getting used to it all, but I do want to progress to moving WW when Im ready. What do all you guys and gals recommend?? I dont know anyone else whos into kayaking so I cant really ask mates for their advise, so you're all Ive got Peeps :(

I use Ty Warp Warp 10s and like 'em.

Pros:
• Very light
• Oblong shaft design means you know where your grip is
• Cheap and cheerful

Cons:
• Wear down relatively easily
• I've heard of people they've broken on (but then this happens with all blades at some point)

My next paddles will probably be cranks as the ~12º feather on the straight shaft occassionally hurts my wrists.

Lots of people I paddle with use Robsons and love them. They're very durable, although considerably heavier than the Ty Warps. I'd say demo as many different paddles within your budget before you buy.

In my experience even buying the cheapest Werner is your best long term buy. You will be very happy long term with a glass player. I have not tried Tywarp yet, although we are getting them at work, but the others I have are not up to the same quality in blade design and feel.

Robson Robson are stronger a bit more expensive but not much £160 for the cranked or £130 for a straight shaft.

Personally I would avoid the ainsworths they fall apart very quickly and horrible to use.

I would recommend trying a mid size blade which would be less stressfull on your joints to start with and makes the strokes easier to learn on moving water as you will be able to hold on to them easier!

I'd recomend a pair of Lendal Mania's as good, mid range paddles. They are not as light as the werners or robsons, but are nice and powerful, very strong so wont mind you scraping them on low water/ making mistakes as you lean.
I believe mine were around £80 which is nicely between the really expensive werners and cheap ainsworth paddles.
Trying to find some people to paddle with would be a very sensible idea, even paddling alone on flat can be a bit dangerous, especially if you don't fully understand what you're doing...and being a bit adventurous! Local clubs are good for that!

try and check out eithe an AT-3 or AT4 play. both are excelllent paddles that aren't too spendy, but they might be hard to come by in the UK, I'm not really sure.

Thanks for all your input everybody, I was looking at the Robson oracle or stud in particular or the tywarps, but Im glad that you've told me not to go for the ainsworth as I now can just get what I wanted in the first place anyway :roflol:
