G force & Slicy Bows problem 18 years 2 months ago #12963

On the site kayakoutfitting.com/tips/space_cadet/index.html it shows a LL space cadet having its bows crushed in order to make it more \"slicey\".
Is this advisable? On my G force, the bows aren't particularly \"slicey\" - would anyone advise against crushing it? And, does anyone know whether the plastic it is made from (polyethelene) can take the pressure from crushing it, and wouldn't split? (as the last thing that I want is a split boat)
Thanks

GS

Dude the G-force will cartwheel easily even the big one! Yes it is made out out polyethalene, You could squash the boat but in doing so you are at risk of damging it permantly and voiding your warrenty!

My best advice would be to keep on practising. Playboats will not automatically cartwheel you need to learn how to do it which takes time.

What size boat do you have and how much do you weigh etc may shed some more light onto your problem.

For instance i weigh 75kgs and all sizes cartwheel on the flat but i find the mid size one better fit te lil one is tight and the big ones huge but they all cartwheel.

If you do crush it theres not much space for feet at the best of time so be careful and you probably wont be able to sell it in the future!

The Gforce will cartwheel fine.
There was a time in which I could not cartwheel the lowest cut squuirt boat (not that is the definition of slicey). It took me a long time to work on my technique, but eventually I got it.

The larger the boat you learn how to throw around, the better your technique will be eventually. Think of this in the longer term.

What really worked for me, was that I found a way to forget about cartwheeling in flatwater for a while. But, every river I ran, I did a few attempts going into each eddy, leaving each eddy, and while floating in the flats. It's something that takes alot of time, so you have to find a way to get in that time while still having fun.

Chin up. Keep trying. You'll get there.

There really is no need to crush the ends, atall.
The G-force may not be the most slicey boat, but it's ends are reletively slicy compared to alot of playboats.
LL boats have quite quare bows, whereas dagger boats do not...
Just keep practising and it will come eventually.
Good luck!
Kicks

Edit: I have a G-force and me and lots of other paddlers can throw it around on the flat with ease.

unless you've got a lot of boats coming in, like you are sponsored or something , and you want to try it as an experiment, I would have to say it is a bad idea. The G- force is short enough that without being slicy, it still cartwheels and flatwaters easilt, besides, it will probably end up throwing off the volume distribution, and end up leaking. There is a reason the boat is designed the way it is, and you would probably end up sacrivficing loops and areal moves, although Brooke Winger was telling me about how she modified her transformer (by putting a frame in it, then running over it with a car.) At first, the guys from wavesport were mad, but she kept winning in it, so there was nothing they could say. The bottom line is unless you have expendable resources, don't do it.

hmmm, a little name dropping huh batayak?
In terms of the g-force, everyone is right on, its probably just a matter of practice. One thing you could do is move the seat forward, that helped me a lot, same with adding a bit of water in your baot to add the weight you can throw araound.

Buddy if you can't double pump the G-Force you really need to be thinking about your technique not the boat! i personally own a g-force 6.1 and it's the easiest boat i've ever cartwheeled! in fact i learned to cartwheel in one. Try working on your personal skills and not blaming the equipment!!

Just to reply to Urge, i am 5'10'' and weigh 55 kgs.
I think that I am probably a bit light; but as mhoole says, i must stop blaming my equipment, and blame my technique instead.

Thats cool we all learnt somewhere! It takes lots of time and patience but you will get there I learnt to cartwheel in a inazone 230 that was fun but was possible! Check Ken Whitings Playboating DVD or EJS playboating basics they will help you visulise what you need to do and where you may be going wrong!

I remember when ifirst started i thought I was keeping my boat on edgen but infact I was flattening it out between pumps and the boat found the easiest way to the surface, I didnt realise till a friend pointed it out then wahay I got my first two ends linked

Have fun keep practising:roflol:

one of the best things you can do in any boat to learn how to cartwheel/bow stall is to get near the edge of a pool and stand it up on the bow, doing a bow stall while holding the edge, instead of your paddle. What this does is it gives you a really good feel for how much power it takes to pull the bow all the way under you, as well as how much edge you'll have to engage. Once you've got that down, if you're anything like me, you'll have a very easy time getting your stern to go under for the second end. It's that third end that's a doozie, but after you've mastered that, you can pretty much wheel your way across a lake.

Keep trying, and don't get discouraged!
