Start trying to flatspin on it, or at least spin halfway and backsurf.

learn how to squirt on an eddy line too. That's fun.

When you are surfing a wave, you can cut back and forth across it right?
When you are doing that, you are digging your downstream edge into the wave. If you lean too far downstream and dig too much of your boat into the wave, then very often you get pulled off the back of the wave, or shot off the side.

You have to overcome that in a flatspin by keeping a flat boat. (and think light thoughts)

Start at the top of the wave, front surfing.

For now, just notice that moment when you start to race down the face of the wave. That will important to notice. Find a way to cut back and forth to get to the top of the wave again. Notice when you just start to speed down towards the bottom of the wave. (this is good to just feel out when you are surfing with only one other friend, so you can spend some real time doing it without people getting angry at you in the lineup)

Here's why you need to know that stuff....
You are at the top of the wave, and at that instant when you start to slip down the wave face, you will do a reverse sweep, just like you are turning your boat in flatwater. Keep the boat flat. If it doesn't work, ask youself if you are leaning an edge hard downstream.

I visualize it two ways, depending on the wave.

1. I have my paddle in a rudder just behind my hip. At the right moment I am keeping the paddle in the same place as if it's planted in concrete. I quickly turn my body to make my feet meet the paddle blade.

2. Paddle in the same rudder position, at the right moment, just as I start to slip down the face of the wave, I throw my opposite hip towards the trough of the wave.

I am working at a desk right now with a swivel chair. If you are doing the same try this.

Grab your desk and turn your body 180 degrees. Do it once focusing on your legs out in front of you. Do it once focusing on your hip.

That's all I can think of right now.

In short, keep leaning away from the current (downstream), and just pull your boat around backwards and then throw in another stroke to bring it back forwards. If the wave is retentive enough, you should have no problem, and it's pretty common sense once you start in on it. The key part is not letting your upstream edge catch, so make sure you're constantly leaning downstream.

what everyone has been saying about spinning is right, but dont forget to lead with your head, always look where you want your boat to go. Im not to far past flatspings myself and this really helped me when i was learning.

Sounds crazy i know but once u nail the pop it really comes naturally! also they look cool as hell, and if you through an off axis one by mistake clame it as a different move!!

I thought a mystery move was a squirt boating move where you dissapear under the water and then resurface somewhere else

mysterious move good name, just got back from paddling on the river irwell learnt to flatspin and did half a cartwheel, flatspins are suprisingly easy to learn when you get confident

I believe those \"Mysterious moves\" are called \"Unintendos.\" I'm an expert at all of them that finish with me being upside down.

I have thought of another very cool move that any beginner can do. It feels awesome, it's fast and it has high spectator value. It's called the window shade ;-)

If you don't know how to do it, it's really easy. Sit in a hole or wave and side surf nicely. Then lean upstream and smile. Voila. (just a joke, naturally )
