Kayaking glasses for high prescription. 18 years 2 months ago #13266

Unfortunately I can't wear contact lenses yet. the most performance frames (oakley water jacket, sea specs etc..) for my high prescription not works. I proved the rec specs max but the fogg is unbearable

After goggle search perhaps the best choices are:

www.silverfish.com/ The s-rat.

www.uscav.com/productinfo.aspx?TabID=548...3726&PID=1066433

I am discouraged and I don't want to drop my sport.

Is there some kayaker optician in this forum? Any help will be very, very, appreciated. Thanks.

I got mine from glassesdirect.co.uk, they are bolle safety glasses, fit really well. Unfortunately I don't know how high the prescriptions go and it probably wouldn't be convenient since you are in Spain.

Hope this helps

I am an Optician and wonder why you say you canot wear contact lenses yet ???

Failing that have you considered a dive mask with an rx insert ?

Thank you. What model of Bolle frames do you use?. Are resistant to the impacts? Any problem with the fogg?.

I can search it in Spain.

Hi Try looking at this link

www.gosportspex.com/Diving.asp

I would be interested in knowing why you cannot wear contact lenses, I have plenty of patient who think that they are unsuitable but turn out to get on with them fine.

Andy,

After a cancer's treatment i have very dry eyes and a principle of cataracts due the effects of the chemotherapy (specially the high doses of corticoids).

MY ophthalmologist don't recommend wear conctact lenses.

I have Bolle 704's, the lenses are made of polycarbonate with a scratch resistant coating so there definetly up to the job. I have had no problems with them fogging up and you can get them made to your specification.

I am also a paddler with bad eyes. I wear contacts, but am told by my eye care professional that contact lenses and freshwater are not a good mix because of the micro organizms that reside their can damage eyes when held in place by a contact lense (sorry, can't remember the name of the beastie). I also hate having contact lenses wash out of place when your in a tough bit of water.

I have been considering going back to glasses for paddling, but really hate the fogging issues. I know a few people who paddle in their regular prescription glasses with a strap on, but I am always afraid of loosing a lense or my glasses totally...the things are really expensive.

I would also be interested in finding a kayaking specific frame and strap that worked for higher prescriptions. The Oakly Waterjackets/Seaspecs concept would be fine without the curve and maybe get ride of some of the size (reduce lense weight and let you get a finger behind them to let air in and wipe out fog.

I have written Oakley in the past, maybe a few other people could too.

Please don't give up paddling, the technology or some other solution will hopefully catch or pop up.

Hey man, sorry to hear about your eyes. Contact lenses and water are usually not a good idea. I don't wear glasses or contacts but a mate of mine has eyes that are not too sharp. He'd run rapids and not be able to see too well until he was on top of something. Not very fun for him. Eventually he got a pair of prescription glasses from the optometrist. They are Polaroid’s. Work pretty damn well and the lenses are polarized which is awesome as it removes are glare from the water and enhances colours too. (Good for fishing, especially sight fishing in rivers) I’m sure you can get Polaroid’s anywhere in the world.

As far as impact goes, no glasses will really stand up to a big knock. Some guys windsurf with a kind of goggles. Not sure what make they are or if they can be fitted with prescription lenses.

Very resistant to the impacts, fits under a helmet, maximum airflow for less fogging, and available in all the prescriptions, lenses etc.. and cheap.

I will buy them.

Yes, but is not a option for me. Barz goggles don't accept prescriptions more than +2,50 .

So far the best glasses that i had proved. Lightweight with a polycarbonate lenses, resistant to the impacts. A peaked helmet aids for it. Fits perfectly in the face. Fogging is not a problem, Maybe needs a antifog solution in a very cold days.

Cons:

Not many of peripherical vision. The rubber strap seems a little fragile, buy a replacement. Uglyest. Well, a vintage look. The latest fashion

In any case

I've been using prescription SeaSpecs for 3 months and, generally speaking, they have been great.

In sea surf they give great allround vision, stay on when you get trashed, and dont seem to fog at all. Superb for admiring the Hawaii surf babes.

On the river they are OK, and so long as it is windy and dry (air) they dont fog. However, in conditions where the water is cold and the air is still and humid, they do seem to fog no matter how much I gob on them or spray them with anti-fog.

So has anyone found the miracle solution yet????

Generally speaking I am well pleased with my SeaSpecs.
