Say i've just stolen a mates horrible looking pink helmet that makes me look like, to be polite a part of the human anatomy bouncincg down a river. If you wanted to sort the helmet out eg different colour or some form of graphic. Any ideas or do you reckon bin it an get a new one?

I'd say, toss it. What is your life worth to you? To me, it's worth the absolute best protection I can get my hands on and I wouldn't compromise on anything. Check out these posts:

Having a good friend sustain a severe head injury and having to learn how to walk and talk again is something I would never wish on anyone. At least in kayaking you'd probably drown before they manage to salvage the body.. :-) Not to make light of a bad situation.

Where in South Africa are you from??? :ask:

Cape-Town.
All my kayaking done in the surf so don't ever wear a helmet. Came across this item, it'd be more decorative that anything. Wondering if there's a way to actually make it umm not pink anymore.

OK. The Harare thing confused me. You can paint it for sure. Just be very careful as to what paint to use. I'm no expert though.

I always use a helmet in the surf. Mate of mine knocked himself out with his paddle because he wasn't wearing a helmet. Luckily he regained consciousness and then rolled up after a while. Could have ended differently though.

If you have a photo of it then you can post it up on the forum just make sure that the height and width is less than 499 pixels.. What is the helmet made of?

Ha being from South-Africa you'd know the sucker. Those horrible looking pink items, all the rafting companies hand them out. Because it's cheap and nasty I want to experiment on it.
Im sure you could paint on it, but how would it hold up to scratches etc. Could you take it to someone who does car or surf-board graphics?
Did you get your helmet in Joburg or an import?

Ha, only read those links you gave now, just assumed it would be something about horrible stuff happening to people who don't wear helmets. I'm just going to mess around with it, see what happens.
Can't actually buy decent helmets down here. Did you get that sweet up in joburg? If so which shop? and the rand damage?

Re:Pimp my Helmet 18 years 2 months ago #13427

I bought the helmet from www.coloradokayak.com/

It was pretty expensive. $240 including shipping and then when I picked it up from the post office they nailed me another R252 for import tax. So all in all, about R2000. Took just over a week. Well worth it, I think. Super comfortable and the peak really helps a lot with our harsh sun! As you know already. The quality is exceptional and I can't actually criticise it at all.

You're probably talking about those old plastic things. I wouldn't spend too much on it. The cost of getting an artist or professional to coat it would probably be close to that of importing a Sweet Strutter. Check out the Sweet Rocker if you want a helmet with more coverage.

If you want me to mail you pictures of mine, send me your e-mail. Cool.. ;)

another way is to get some realy thin tape and mask off a design and then spray it in the colours that you want and it would look really cool!!

Thanks for that,
Andrew doesn't have anything worth buying, same story this side if it doesn't look pimp no point in buying it. No real rush though, bar dungeons, sunset, factory, dunes and other such madness you'd have to get smacked by your own equipment to be smoked.
The predators look cool, only come in one size though so there's a danger of looking like the martian out of the loony tunes.
Talking kit the only pfd's you can get down here are the GOYA ones which are nice but like Fluid boats everyone has one. Do any of the shops up there have nice ones?
What do you guys do for paddling up there come winter?

Hehehehe, yeah, Robbie Herrevelds Canoe and Kayak World stocks a fair amount of good stuff. He has a selection of Palm PFD's and throwbags, booties, dry tops, spray decks etc. Not everyone up here paddles Fluid although it is pretty dominant. They are getting better over time for sure.

Winter sucks big time. Usually only the Klip is ok. And the Ash of course. This winter I'm heading to Europe to paddle Finland, Sweden and Norway for about a month. Tickets and everything paid for. Folks moving to Cape Town and sister has been there for a few years already. Looks like I'll be heading down there too at the end of this year... Not sure yet.

I've hiked along the Wit. It looks incredible. World class creek when it rains! How's the Palmiet, Dwars etc? Upper Dwars I hear is really good. :bounce:

I'll give Robbie a burn. I dont paddle river but from what I hear if tight and technical floats your boat you'll be in heaven, for 3 months of the year anywayz. Last rains were last winter bar some drizzle, Luke Powers reckons the Palmiet was runnable over X-Mas but i'm thinking some withdrawal inspired thinking there. Cape kayakers hibernate, tubby louts normally crawl ot of the wood-work around June. You'll definately have to get into goat-boating while if you move down, good surf here and you can fit a few hours in after work rather than drive 2 hours.
Ha i think that i'll get my sweet before I start braaing helmet.

Swaziland is fantastic. I hit it the other weekend with Philip (KayakSA). We had very low water but it was still good. Check it out:

adrian.playak.com/index.php?option=com_c...p;id=22&Itemid=3

Hopefully next time it's a little fuller. Had some good water two weekends ago:

adrian.playak.com/index.php?option=com_c...p;id=24&Itemid=3

And this past weekend we did the Umzimkulu River (Thrombosis Gorge). I'll post that next week sometime. We've got to travel between 450 and 700 km (one way!) to reach these rivers but at least they're closer for us than for you. It would be magic to live in Pietermaritzburg... oh yes!

Only Riots,Got a Boogie and a little turbo. Also used to have a flirt but it got eneded on the liesbek river, concrete.
Those Megas are landing in 2 weeks, so i'll be adding to my little Armada, can hardly wait. Then its a composite boat next, reckon i'd trade my gran in for one of them.
I'm also keen to see what the Element comes out like, could be some potential there if they haven't made it too much like a playboat.
Ha I quite like the gaths, can even order customised.
450+ km is overrated. I'll stop whining about the break hunts. All the rivers here, generally, in the 1-2 hour drive range, Doring a bit further.
If you do come down in Winter definately come out for a surf, best time of year for surf, try Muzies with a surf boat, you'll love it.

I tried a prototype Element on the bottom wave of Gatsien. Also tried it out on some big surf in December (only big day we had). It was pretty impressive. Incredibly loose and spins like a dream. Carves really well too. Just very unstable waiting for sets. Gets big air and is easy to paddle over the whitewater because of the sharp rocker on the nose. Doesn't compare to my ZG. They are still fine tuning it in a plastic version. Some will be made in a composite material and given out to the team riders. Depending on durability/cost/demand etc. they might be available as plastic and composite to the average Joe.

On the prototype that you had was there a proper try fin set-up or were the wake-board fin mountings still on there, was it quad fin or just the two?

Re:Pimp my Helmet 18 years 2 months ago #13478

On those protos there were just some indentations that would hold the old system, like on the Flirts, 2 fins. None had been added onto the two boats I tried. No fins, no attachments. Perhaps they will change how many fins. I have no idea...

Cool,
Last I heard it was going to be a quad fin setup with wake-board fins. Has anyone out there ever surfed with that setup?
