Help choosing first kayak 19 years 5 months ago #1396

I had my first real whitewater experience shredding the Cheat Canyon a couple of weeks ago and am hooked. I would like to start kayaking in the spring but need to practice rolling and technique over the winter to see if I can really do it. I really don't know much about kayaks and am looking for some help. I have been told to try out different models to see what I feel comfortable in. I have been told that paddlers are awesome people who love to share the excitement and help fellow paddlers. So I am looking for someone, anyone, who is willing to help me out. I live in Millvale (Pittsburgh), PA. My e-mail address is [mail address protected from spambots with javascript] . Please let me know your view on what particular model would be good for a beginner or if you know anyone willing to let me take their's for a test drive.

first you should take lessons. If your gonna be indoors all winter then you defenitly won't need you rown boat. Get lessons somewhere as fast as you can. Find a lesson place that offers packages. Two classes with rolling, a strokes class, and then a river running class. Places that offer only rolling are usually bad lessons. Find a place with a "curriculum". absolutly do not buy a boat. You may want to run rivers and creeks or playboat. Or any combination of the 3. If you want a response for boats include height and weight. Also include the kind of kayaking you want to do. But since your wants may change, wait a while.

congrats on entering the great sport.

If u look for a boat (first try differend kayaks)on the net it is also usefull if u give your lenght en weight. a 2 m boy, 100kg doesn't kayaks with an S6. And in the beginning is an allround ww boat good i think. u can start in it: normally they are forgiving, easy to roll and not so expensive. for your money: look for an olderbaot u can buy from someone esle.
Never buy a to smal boat u would nver enjoy kayaking then.

Definitel take classes before you buy your own boat, since ther are many different styles out there. also, it would be nice if the class had at least one or two( the more the better) classes on the river so you can get a feel for what you like. don't rush into a boat, demo a bucnh before you buy, it helps a lot, Also, dont feel any pressure to buy all new gear, buying used stuff takes at least a couple hundred bucks off. Anaother thing thats great is to find a bunch of paddling buddies so you dont end up relying on classes to get out on the rive, im in this situation and its very frustrating. Have fun :roflol: :cursing: :comfort:  :naughty:   :bitching: :bitching:

PS. The more emoticons someone uses, the better the padler they are.lol :roflol:
