How to carry your kayak 18 years 1 month ago #14074

I was wondering if anyone knows of any websites that sell kayak carriers, or even better know the best way to make your own kayak backpack. (like when you see creek boaters hiking in with their boats strapped to their backs)
Any help will be greatly apreciated.
Thanks

Depends on your boat and how fancy you want to make it. On my old inazone I threaded a 2.4m tape sling through the loops holding the (non-ratchet type) backband and clipped both ends onto the stern grabloop with a carabiner. I wore it with the boat upright and my head and shoulders just inside the cockpit. It wouldnt be as comfortable or stable as a purpose made system but its quick and you probably carry both components anyway.

I cant work out how to do it on my flirt though as the deck looks like it would stick into my back.

right either get a lazy turtle or salamander type back system. Or my idea get an old/ cheap ruck sack with a padded back and cut off the reat of the rucksack leaving yourback system. Now get some roof rack straps and sew them onto your back system wohla!

depending on your terrain, yak sling has worked for us on long beach walkins - albeit flat walks...

I used to think real boaters only carried on their shoulders. Then I began to be a real boater, 45lb creekboat w/ 35 lbs of gear. That much weight is problay too much for even a real boater to carry for 3 miles. :)

I drag mine whenever possible. I use the tether on my rescue vest and drag that puppy down the road. Jackson's have the crossed linked plastic, so I don't worry so much about wear and tear. Only down side is, it is kind of loud, so holding a conversation is difficult.

I also have a Yak Pak for serious hikes

hydraulics make a simple harness system.

very simple idea, of course is easy to make your own system too, use sling biners etc (gear from your rescue/pin kit) if you don't have one you should! and of course know how to use the gear in it....

NRS has a good system to check out and easy to copy if your cheap like me. Some webbinng and a old backpack will do the trick. Then in a pinch the webbing can double as some anchor or rescue material.
