With your paddle. Depends on the situation and how your body was positioned in the first place. What's available to brace on, a cushion, pillar, wave, hole, boils..? rocks

High brace, power face of the paddle facing downwards, keep your hands below your head and your arms in front of your shoulder line. Keep you elbows close to your body.

Low, brace, power face of the paddle facing upwards, keep your elbows close to your body. Low brace is safer for the shoulders. High brace can be made safe with good technique.

Depends on the situation of how you'll use it. Comes with experience. Practise on flat water by going almost over and recover with a brace etc.

Remember, bracing in only there to correct mistakes. Don't rely on them while running rivers. Keep paddling using forward strokes and make use of draw strokes. There are certain situations where one would brace on a diagonal, for example, if you wanted to do that and not punch it. Bracing in wild holes etc. If this was all Greek to you then get some of the instructional DVD's. There are some great ones on the market. Have fun... :bounce:
