Boat stats and performance? 18 years 2 weeks ago #14647

How does the hull shape, volume distribution and length affect the performance of boats?

A lot. The only way I can imagine explaining this would be hours long and full of controverisal statements. There's an entire field of hydro dynamics that is needed to explain this. It seems like you are asking a very long winded way of \" what boat is better for me\"

thankyou for your reply, the reason i ask is because im in the middle of researching kayaking for my out door rec course, i have a fair idea of how it affects the performance of boat for instance if the hull is narrow then that would make the boat more unstable, also if there is alot of volume in the boat then its gonna be more stable and better suited for a beginner, its just the length that is getting me.
Please correct me if im wrong

if it's just that, that an easy one. it's the same as with most gliding gear, e.g. snowboards.

more length = more speed (i.e. better for long distances), less maneuverability (and more weight of course, but that's normally not the main effect).

less length = great maneuverability (i.e. great for freestyle or tight technical creeks), less speed.

Plus, the length is also a factor in both the hull's surface and the boat's volume of course, so we could continue the discussion in that direction, but you were asking for the effects of length only :)
If you're happy, you're successful.
