Whats going wrong? 17 years 11 months ago #15127

I expect you all to reply 'check out the millions of other threads on this topic'... but iv looked and cant find any covering my particular problem, so any advice or links would be much appreciated.

Im trying to learn how to flatwater loop, and i can bowstall away happily with good balance and without falling over... when it comes to bouncing... i seem to get the first bounce fine, but as i rise up on the second bounce when i'm about to throw the loop, the boat seems to pitch forwards, tipping me onto my face instead of throwing me upwards for some air.

I think the bounce is deep enough since i have seen guys do it with very little bounce, its just holding it together that little bit longer so i can launch properly.

any advice on this? as i seem to spend most of my time flopping over whilst the boat is semi-submerged, rather than flipping over at the peak of the bounce..

Thanks in advance for any tips/material on this,

Simon

Can you loop in a hole well? Can you loop in really bad holes too? I couldn't bowstall when I learned to flatwater loop. i would double pump, and as my boat was coming vertical, I would slam it down with my paddle and do the loop. Now, that I can bowstall I usualy only pop it down once, then go for it on the second one. My project has a lot of pop so I normaly wait a fraction of a second before throwing the loop, so I am sure to clean my stern. I think adrian has the flatwater loop down as well, so he may be able to articulate it better.

I'd say, try to concentrate on bouncing as high as you can without actually going for a loop. Once you get a hang of generating a controlled high agressive bounce, try to carry it on to a loop. Tuck in, push your feet out.
Hope it helps some. Tell us how goes.

thanks guys.

I figured that even if i wasnt pulling them off yet, the bouncing was good practice and so i will gradually improve at it.

I think it is a matter of getting the bounce right as i can loop in a hole, and on flatwater from a launch or a friend chucking my boat down from the side.

Il let you know how it goes, and if i make any progress,,

Cheers,

Simon

Yes, Adrian has it down.. I'm no pro but can flat water my ZG54 and EZG60 at about 85/87kg.

I must admit, it took me ages to get it. Really, I have never seen anyone do one in real life so there was no one to show me. The day I realised how important it is to throw your legs, is the day I got it. A good bounce is nice, but not essential. I use usually two bounces to initiate. Any more and you tend to loose rhythm. Maybe a slight lean forward on the final bounce, but again, not essential.

Just before you reach the apex of the bounce, throw your head and arms down. More important your head and body but arms help too for more momentum. Pretty much after that, read directly - almost, throw your legs down. You will feel the tail dig in and then throw your legs!

Put your paddle above your head to help throw your legs down and away from you or else put one blade across your shoulders and behind you, keeping your hands still in front of your shoulder line. Just be careful not to twist the ending then. Keep trying. You WILL get it.

The day I got it I decided that I wasn't going home until I got it. Then I had an inflatale beach ball between my legs. Just enough to be level with the deck and then a plastic, non-inflatable ball on top for a little dome. Helps stop the deck pushing in and gives more pop. Helped me. I can do them without that now... Good LUCK. Hope this helped a little...

went down on the river today and succesfully stuck a couple :)

found it helped loads 2 have a beach ball under the deck.

A couple were fine, but quite a lot i found myself coming up sideways.. almost sort of rolling but not meaning 2... it felt like it was happening when i wasnt launching right... just practice i guess.

anyway, thanks for your help on the subject guys :)

a cool new skill in the bank.

Cheers,

Simon
