Hi Joe,

You're wrong on one thing. You can't do that at home. You cannot get the same experience, feelings etc, because it's in your own country, familiar surroundings, people, culture etc.

I would say, go overseas to paddle. It will be money well spent. Three choices. Go for the kind of 'pre-paid' trip where everything is organised and the people know the rivers and put-in's and take-outs. This would probably be the most expensive option, but fairly safe. Second option would be to try and 'meet' someone via the internet and see if you can hook up with them. This is cheaper (should be) with a little more risk but could potentially be far better. Option three. Just arrive and start a mission with people you meet up with along the way. Could be great or a disaster and depends heavliy on your personality. When I mean 'safe', I mean, you would be there for 20 days and only paddle 10. Which is not as good as paddling maybe 17 out of 20. Know what I mean?

Depending on your personality or mates with enough cash/interest/time? go either with a mate or alone. I would go alone. Then you get the full deal and fully immerse yourself into the whole experience/culture/people etc. Good luck and have fun. I'm off in less than 5 weeks to Scandinavia. No looking back and worth every penny. The next trip is already in the pipe line. You only live once

but to answer your question, I don't know that company. Maybe a mate of mine does... (KayakSA?)

Hope this helped... :bounce:

It was expensive no doubt, but extremely well organised. If you go and I definitely think you should consider it make sure you stay at the camp site. (Have never had soo much and so good food before) It is, however, a very relaxed atmosphere with a lot of hanging around the camp fire and may be more focused on the well heeled clients (It is expensive to fly to Chile)

If I was you, being a British Uni grad, I would suggest that you go to the Nile instead ... Stay at the Lemon and join up, as Adrian, suggested with other people wanting to go down the river. Alternatively check with kayak the nile - Also a great outfit, but more focused on the younger population ... And do bring your own kayak etc.

Cheers, Peter

What Peter says is true about the type of cliental. :-)

I forgot to ask. What type of boating do you want to do? Adventure, multi-day? Big water? Play? Creek? River run? Nile or Zambezi are both good options, for big water and play. Nile is more play (park and play) and would probably be cheaper. Zam has awesome spots too though. Being Africa, it's cheap... Have you checked the exchange rate lately? Coming to South Africa, you'd be 13.76 times richer! Quite a HUGE difference. Our minimum wage is exaclty five times less than your 5.35 pounds per hour, I think it is. :ask: Something to also consider. The Nile (Uganda)is dirt cheap with the Zambezi (Zambia) being slightly more expensive but not much.

Ask Scotty about the Zam, he's the man in the know. I may be going to the Zam for a month in November, depending what happens next week with a new job opportunity. Got to work that into the deal.
