choosing a kayak 17 years 11 months ago #15501

I am 14 87 pounds and have some kayaking experience. I am looking for an intermediate kayak. I would like to use it for creeks rivers, and if possible some play. I have no idea what to look at and my price range is limited. Any suggestions would be appreciated

If this is your first boat, then you may find it easier to get ariver running boat to fit you that will be good for the majority of th rivers. Try out the fun series from jackson wavesports ezg, to name but a few

I have looked for kayak dealers around me and there really arent any. The only place that sells kayaks is dicks sporting goods. The main brand there are pelicans and they dont really seam like the boats in which you have showed me. Would these do well for me or do I need to look for more dealers.

I’m a novice at whitewater but even so I feel qualified to offer some advice. For starters if you are asking if a pelican compares to the boats mentioned in the previous replies then your question is akin to asking “does a Porsche 911 compare to a Chrysler K car?”.

Please don’t be offended – I was there and many others have too. Dick’s sports caters to recreational flat water paddling and I can assure you that you won’t be buying a boat from them if you are truly interested in whitewater paddling.

My initial thought and best advice I can offer is to find a ww kayak club in your area or hang out where the paddlers go and don’t be shy to approach them and ask for advice about boats, gear and training. I do it all the time and have learned a ton.

you should try to find a used riot disco, it's a good all around boat and at your weight should float enough for some river running, don'T expect to do some creeking in your first year of kayaking

I have no idea what i am talking about but i always thought that creeks would be easier than rivers. Why is it not ?

In WW kayaking, a \"creek\" is actually a steep river full of rocks and falls, generally something you move onto after learning on a flatter river. The advice so far is pretty good, the fun series, the disco, good beginner boats. For cheaper 2nd hand boats check out smaller pyranha inazones, riot boosters, dagger GTs, liquid logic lil joe or others like that. I wouldn't go for a flatwater boat, look for something under 8foot long and not too fat looking, that'd be a good start!

creeks are defenitly not easier than rivers, quite the opposite. What i would do in your position is join a club or camp, learn the basic in a river runner, generally a longer, more forgiving oriented, and then follow your interests from there. i personally wouldnt by an intermediary type boat like a riverrunner/playboat or a riverrrunner/creeker, both a creeker and a playboat will perform fine in most river situations( up to class for anyways for the playboat). Ive found that a kayak that combines differnet aspects of kayaking is great for the accosional user who sint committed to a specific type, but once you get into it a compromised design will usually hold you back

if you are looking for a boat, then you must decide if you are going to run more difficult rivers (creeks) or do more play.

A playboat will make familiar rivers more difficult at first, but you will be able to learn a bunch of play moves and have fun doing that.

A creek boat will make familiar rivers easier at first, and you'll then be tempted to go run more difficult rivers. But, the play will be limited to front surfing and some old-school style enders (unless you are already a pro)

I've been doing lots of teaching with beginners in the DR Gangster because the runs around here can be rocky and tight.
