Burn Carwheels??? 17 years 10 months ago #15774

I am going to be a lot of flat water over the summer and was wondering if the Burn could actually do flatwater cartwheels. I want to try to learn how to do them, just not sure if it is possible in a longer boat.

Does anyone know???? or is trying to do it a lost cause?

It would take a lot of grit to flatwater cartwheel the Burn. It's probably not impossible, but if you are just learning to flatwater cartwheel it will never happend in a Burn. Get a hold of something small and slicy to start learning with.

The smallest Burn is 238 litres (63 gallons). Maybe, if you weighed more than 110/120 kg or so, then you could MAYBE do it. But apart from the volume, the shape of the boat is not for cartwheeling. The boat was designed not to sink edges and keep you safe/upright/not vertical in difficult/dangerous whitewater. In a big hole you could but it would be tough (and slow and bouncy) and you'd need very good technique.

Sorry mate. I just don't see it happening. Best you buy another boat for playing in holes and waves and also for flat water. ;)

Agree with the guys above, but if you do manage to do it, could you possibly post a video or something of it? Would be interesting to see...
Good luck mate!

Thanks for the feedback. It seemed sort of unlikely for me - weigh 145 pounds and am 6 foot 3.

I'll still try - even if it doesn't work it will be good balance/control practise

Thanks again :D
(if a miracle occurs and I pull it off you guys will be the first to know)

Adrian,

You just need a big enough hole :) I got one stuck in a 8' ledge drop and got a lot of unintentional quick, rather fluid ends before eventually flushing. Wasn't slow and bouncy at all :)

Too bad there aren't any big holes around.
I could try to make one but something tells me that I would fail.

Does anyone have any tips for practising in flat water, paddle technique etc (with the burn) ?

The question is then, were they on purpose?  ;)

To actively seek out large holes to cartwheel your boat in is not my idea of fun. And I know you didn't do that on purpose, Im just saying. It is loads of work, I know..

Haha that's why mentioned them as unintentional ends, I was glad to eventually flush. It was this ledge at similar flows on a different day...

Find a lovely wave train and throw it down, You will get looks of astonishment from all the playboaters thinkin ' How the F@*% did he just do that in a creek boat!' and the like, so much fun and get it onto a wave spins, blunts cartwheels all go and old school moves like massive pop outs work realy well! If you got mr Ellards skills try a loop.

I use the old syncro version h3 but could consider a burn for next season hmm (drewl)

Well, I'm still pretty new to Whitewater so I still have a lot to learn before I get any looks of astonishment

But I will definatly have to try out some of your suggestions
(yes the burn is shweet :roflol: )

I can can throw my Burn up on a wave train, but i'd suggest getting an ammo. I was able to throw that around in flatwater and I weigh 135, so I'm sure you could.

I have a lot to practise before getting a more play oriented boat, but in the future when I have more skill, kayaking friends and cash. I am definatly going to buy a more play oriented boat.

The fact that the burn is so high volume is not going to stop me from trying playboating moves in it tho . Worst case senario, nothing happens and I hit my head on a rock. Best case senario, I'll get a little more skill and practise at being on edge and the other fundimentals, and maybe some looks of astonishment.

I know of some guys being able to throw around a LL Jefe on the flat... part of the GB freestyle team i think, but i would love to see it done!
Sounds pretty fun.
Good luck though!

Anyone who can flatwater cartwheel a Burn is a god in my eyes! Even if you could get the bow under, you'd bob up and be totally out of control. There is just TOO MUCH VOLUME!

Re:Burn Carwheels??? 17 years 6 months ago #18590

I can imagine someone doing it in a pretty big river runner, preferably someone who can already do it in a playboat, but I think a creecker really is to much to ask. I'm getting the points of a DNA up quite a bit, someone of my size but with a lot of skill should have no problems cartwheeling it, but it's a very slicy boat with little volume (for such a long boat with someone like me in it). So I agree with those guys above, not on flatwater. That's basically the main dilemma of kayakking, a real boat wouldn't be that unstable, so instead we go down white water in something resembling a shoe as close as a boat.

I paddle a Riot Sniper (246 ltr / 65 gall) and weigh 10.5 / 11 stone (147 / 154lbs) and can throw big wavewheels in a decent wavetrain. As for throwing a flatwater end in a Burn you would most definitely need to be well beyond the weight range for the boat.

Polo players can do it in a 3m long polo boat. The difference being that they have a flatter bow and stern and about a 3rd of the volume.

:stop: Just a word of caution - if you attempt to flatwater cartwheel your Burn please keep your arms in close and look after your shoulders.
Its all well trying to do something that is not meant to be done with the wrong piece of equipment and managing to do so; but if you wreck your shoulder you may end up making yourself unable to paddle properly or possibly ever again.

Good luck and post pictures:)

You could try putting some water in it to reduce buoyancy. i don't know how you would go switching ends but you might be able to get it vertical.

I used to get on end in my old school Pyranha Creek by adding in a fair amount of water, as for getting it to cartwheel, just make sure you're heavier than the water in the boat and use your weight to tip it sideways, will be really slow until the water moves but when it goes then it'll go fast :)
