Nepal in April? 17 years 10 months ago #16118

I've heard that April is an ok time to go to Nepal to paddle (low water). Can anyone verify or deny this for me? I would like to go paddling there, but September/October is challenging. That being said, if it's not worth going there in April, I'll go somewhere else.

I'm particularly after easier stuff - grade 4 and below... I don't want to be attempting to fall down hard stuff.

Would stuff like the Trisuli, Sun Khosi and Karnali still be worth running? Are there any good class 4 ish runs that would be going in April? Am I being silly thinking about going there at this time? If I went in April, would I need a dry suit, or would a dry top be ok?

Suggest you buy a copy of White Water Nepal by Peter Knowles (Rivers Publishing, UK).

April is an OK month to paddle in Nepal but the weather and water levels are more unpredictable than in the autumn.

If you want guaranteed lower water and stable weather November and even December are still fine for the rivers you mention.

Of the rivers you cite a thin wetsuit plus good paddle-jacket are advisable - the Karnali is cold and a big river so if you do swim, you will be in the water for a while.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the advice.

The book has been ordered, but Amazon takes 8 weeks to deliver to Australia! I have no idea how I'm going to hang out that long!

So basically, I should be fine in a dry top and CAG pants without going to the full drysuit?

I was thinking of getting a guide for the first couple of weeks (at least). Do you think it's a good idea with language and logistics?

Yes a guide is a very good idea, good company, great for sorting-out logistics, plus its more fun and safer.

Charlie at Ganesh Kayaks in Pokhara or Min at PaddleNepal can probably help you find somebody.

May I ask about how much you paid your guide per day? (ballpark figure)

Usual rate is $15-20/day - depending on experience - plus their expenses (buses, food, accommodation) .

Thanks. That is easily split between a couple of people... at that sort of rate, we may as well hire one for the whole trip. I would imagine that having someone who spoke the language fluently would definitely be an advantage
