beginner kayak for a tall person 17 years 10 months ago #16154

I am looking to get into whitewater kayaking. I have been a couple times on my friends necky rip, and it is too small for me even with the footrests jammed into the bow. I want to do some playboating and river running.
I'm 6'2\" 160 lbs. and i need to find a boat for my unusual dimensions.
Any suggestions?

Dont forget you can always take out the footrest and replace it with foam - something waterproof that wont crush, old camping mat or 'minicell', not expanding polyurethane filler or polystyrene. Or try one of the beanbag footrests that are about eg jackson happy feet.

If you are just starting, then get a slightly longer boat so that you can still have a little bit of speed (and not get stuck in too many holes by mistake). Take a look at the DragoRossi Pintail or Pintail XL if you want to be able to run rivers well, surf all the waves and start learning how to cartwheel.
Check out the DragoRossi Stinger if you want to have a boat that is shorter and will do the newer freestyle moves. You will fit in both boats well.

I just bought the Wavesport Diesel. I love it and theres no other boat i'd rather have. Its an awsome river runner and it seemds to have playboat capabilitys.

a customer of mine who is buying a Gangster is coming from owning a Diesel. It is a good boat. Funny thing about teh Diesel and Gangster, they get ignored when it comes to surfing and such. It's unfortunate because they will surf waves quite nicesly. Won't carve, spin, all that type of stuff, but for beginning boaters they can be stable platforms for learning and many people are just learning to really surf by then end of their first season in a kayak.
Good stuff.

I am of similar size and paddle a M flirt, it has a surprising large amount of leg room. I do however have smallish feet (size 9) for my height.

I found it a bit twitchy at first but got used to it over time.
