I need davise/ help from someone smarter than I am

I want to pick up a newer boat... I am paddling LL CR 250 and am not all too pleased with it... It is okay but i think I want something a little more responsive for play and a little easier to throw about...

Im 6ft 1in about 240lbs 110kg ( Im am dropping down to be less than 100kg) 32 inch inseam size 10 (US) feet.

I am looking to stay with playboats.

Ive been looking at 55-60 gallon boats

JK Superstar
WS Project 62
JK Superfun

Where my question comes in is

a) What boat would you recomend for someone my size (BIG GUY)
b) Why is the Superstar at 60gal rated for someone light but the Project 62 for someone heavy... my 63gal CR 250 is rated to 250lbs but the 62gal 4 Fun is rated to 210 lbs...

Damn I am lost here

someone hook my ignorant a$$ up with some stronger smarts PLEASE!!!! before I do something stoopid

Thanks guys/gals

I am an inch taller than you and a little lighter with a size 11 shoe. I recently had the pleasure of paddling a Jackon Super Fun and I was impressed. I am tempted to trade my Mega Rocker for one. It handled nicely, rolled easily, felt stable, and it was VERY comfortable. I never once felt cramped in it. The foot bag took a little to get used to, but It was nice once I fitted it correctly.

It is not a true playboat, but would be great for river running/ play. I am going to be renting one to take down a class 2-3 river in two weeks, and I can let you know more then, but I would certainly demo one if you get the chance.

the SuperStar and Project will be park and play boats for you. Of course you can take them down a river, but they are playboats first and foremost. If you are looking at those then please consider a DragoRossi Thruster (only two left in the country until the next container in the fall) www.100waves.com/specs/thruster.html

The SuperFun is a nice boat and will be more playful than your CR. I really think it's silly not to consider the Fun series as \"true\" playboats because they essentially are playboats with longer sterns.

Note: I edited the above sentence because I had mistaken the Star for the Fun. Now it correctly reflects what I meant to say.

JK markets their star series as playboats, and the 07 Fun as river-running/ play boats. That is why I said it is not a \"true\" playboat. I agree that they are essentailly longer playboats, but I still do not consider it typical as it is not intended to be a pure playboat.

The superstar is 63 gal... that is the same as my CR 250... why is it rated for a lighter paddler?

This is where I get confused...

Thanks for the help so far

Yup. I was talking about the Fun series. Got a little confused in the rush. I really belive that it's marketed as a \"river runner\" because they already have the Star series for the freestyel designation. But \"river runner\" is such a large category, essentially the default category for the boat that isn't extreme one way or another (creeker or park n play). I actually (IMHO) think that the Fun is better than the Star.

Oh volume. It depends WHERE a designer puts the volume. The placement is more important than the raw number. (and volume is an estimate anyway, not a perfect exact number). Volume will give you an idea of how you float the boat sitting still, and give you an idea if the boat is even in your range. Other than that you really need to look at the shape of the boat.

Superstar is wider and shorter than the CR250, and has more volume in the center so it's more like a playboat. The CR250 is stretched out so carries a bit more speed thus making it able to carry the weight of a larger paddler (in theory at least. I have not had the boats head to head since they are too big for me)

Thanks for the help thus far...

Given my stats (big guy)...

What boat would you go with to help me progress through the playboating moves?

Jk Superstar
JK Superfun
WS Project 62
sometihng else?

As my abilities go... I am able to confidently paddle up to and including Class IV... my roll is solid (learning to BD roll). but my Playskills are crap (well I am just beginning)... I guess I am looking for a forgiving boat that will help me really jam up the learning curve.

Thanks again...

You are on the high side of the range for the Thruster, but still would fit as a park and play boat. It would be very easy for you to throw around, but not really a river runner at all. It just depends what you really want to do with the boat. If you want to step up your play game then the Thruster would work exceptionally well for you. But if you wanted to get down some class IV that might scare you a bit you'd need to get back to the CR250 style of boat and stay away from the SuperFun or the Thruster.

should probaly give the link again to make things easy.

I just sold one so only have one more left in stock here in the U.S. until the end of the summer/beginning of Fall.

Quick update...

Thanks for your help everybody!!!

I just picked up a Project 62... I have had it out on Class 2 2+ water and it was simply wonderful. Much easier to roll than my CR 250 and far better outfitting...

Thanks for all your input again...

Take care out there

Also not a bad boat in the rapids. Took it on a full Buffels river (class IV/V) and handled very easy.

You can see Philip (KayakSA) here on the river in the yellow project 62:

He managed every rapid no worries. Of course he's been paddling a very long time which makes quite a difference. Good boat and a sweet river too. :-)
