can any one tell me how to stop a spray deck imploding in to the kayak. it fits the cock pit rim well and is not too loose.

You could use an overthruster… something like this .

A poor man's version can be made by inflating a beach ball between your knees and putting your deck on over it. NOTE: some people consider this dangerous as it may hinder you exiting the boat in a hurry, so use at your own risk.

Cheers,
Ross

Dougie,
if you go to www.robsonpaddle.de & browse their catalogue you should find a small device made from plastic that fits over the front rim of your cockpit that forces the first few inches of the spraydeck slightly upwards.

I believe that these may be specific to Robson kayaks. However, I assume they must use standard cockpit sizes for most spaydecks available on the market. I'm guessing that they probably give the deck enough support for that large deluge of water that lands on you, but still allow you to exit the cockpit if you can't roll out of the situation.

I'd be interested to hear if the local paddle shop has any such device.

i ve heard of using a beach ball before and dont really like the sound of it. seems a bit dangerous. the robson thing may be useful though. i know a guy who put neoprene glue on the inside of his deck and let it dry similar to the decks that have latex linings to help grip the rim. does any one know how well this works?

If you're willing to spend money (and all the other suggestions seem to involve that), I would simply recommend buying a new spraydeck. There are a lot of good decks out there, and if you get one to fit your boat correctly it should basically NEVER implode. Ask your dealer for help on sizings for your boat and listen to their recommendations ... or other people may be able to recommend good decks for your boat.
I personally use a Nookie Shock+Latex and have never had any problems with it.

I have seen many people use the beachball and a product called an \"Overthruster\", both of which would seem to impede a quick exit. I solved the problem with a 3\" block of minicell. I took a 12\"x18\"x3\" block and placed on top of the cockpit of my Kingpin and traced the outline along the OUTSIDE edge of the rim with a marker. I cut the foam along the outline. I placed the block back on top the cockpit and traced the INSIDE edge. I cut along this line approximately 1.5\" deep, then cut out the section along the outside edge, so that the foam overthruster would rest snugly on the edge cockpit. I shaped the block with a wood shaper. Voila! In 20 minutes I had an implosion free skirt with no fear getting slowed down when I want to wet exit. (The foam floats away) Also, my boat stays drier.
