Transporting - - Cradle, J-Carrier, ..? 17 years 11 months ago #16644

Just looking for some suggestions on the best way to transport a single kayak (Dagger RPM).

I drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee, and while I can throw it inside the cabin with me, it only leaves room for one other passenger. Have a factory roof rack and still can't decide what to go with... foam pads, cradle/saddle, j-carrier...? One of the local outdoor stores stocks Thule products, but I was curious if there are any other effective products that aren't quite as expensive?

Any sort of locking mechanism is nice, but isn't much of a necessity as I don't plan on leaving the boat on the rack for any extended length of time.

I drive a jeep Grand Cherokee...

throw the boat on top, Cockpit down.

strap it down to both cross-beams. So it wont lift up

run a strap through each end so the boat wont slide back or forward

...

If you want to go all out, you can buy J-bars or a cradle or anything that you want... personally I just huck mine onthe roof (unless I am driving alone in which case it goes inside)

I'll probably end up doing just that for the time being - - would rather put the money for a rack towards other things. Only thing that ticks me off is my Jeep was the first year ('02) that they made the horizontal cross bars an optional item... as luck would have it, mine didn't have that option so now I've been having a hell of a time finding a used set for cheap (new set from mopar goes for $150, cheapest I've seen on ebay is about half that plus about $20 for shipping)... :cursing:

That being said, I did manage to find the Thule 'Top Deck' saddle set for pretty cheap ($65) - - no frills but gets the job done -- might be the way I go in the future.

And thanks again for all the help you've been giving me these past few days - - it's greatly appreciated :)
