Recommend a kayak for a beginner 17 years 8 months ago #16780

Hi,

Im from louisiana and looking for a good kayak for boating in the surrounding lakes and will start doing adventures races, next year. I weigh around 160-170lbs and 6 feet tall. Also, i'm not looking to spend over $800, but the cheaper the better while still being a good boat.

I don't know where to really start, so any suggestions or link would be appreciated.

PS: If anyone is from the shreveport/bossier area and would like to meet up for some boating/training, let me know.

You need to be looking for a flatwater boat... depending on your needs. If it is racing i suggest a k1 marathon kayak...terribly hard to learn to paddle one of these as they are incredibly tippy until you get them up to speed.

Maybe look around for a recreational boat that is a little longer and slim. good for flatwater fun but you could still race it (somewhat)...

really need to be more specific... I know a little about marathon racing but not a whole hellova lot... might look up some more specific triathalon websites, this site tends to lean more in the way of whitewater.

Mostly, im looking for something to paddle around the lake and very few rivers, but not any major white water rafting with big drop offs/etc.

BTW, most adventure races provide a kayak or canoe. I just mentioned adventure races because its one reason why I am getting a boat to help me train. But I will likey do very little races and hopefully paddling turns into another fun weekend hobby

I'll try to look for some other forums that lean more toward my type of boating....but thanks for any help.

Marathon, sprint boating and running rivers in K1's and K2's (long fibreglass boats) are very popular in South Africa. Check out these pics: www.canoesa.org.za/Media/archive.htm
I've got a sprint boat that I use for some training purposes. It's a great way to get super fit. For adventure racing, you cannot beat this type of training (well, for the paddling side of it anyway)

You get MANY different types too. Some are very difficult to balance in and some are super easy. Talk to your dealer when buying a boat.

You can run some surprisngly big stuff in these boats too... if you have the skill and balls!
