it,s not that hard start practising on small rocks paddle in with lots of speed and lift what ever edge is nearest to the rock once your sliding over the rock fine try ading a spin using your hips and abs to snap the boat round when you are on the rock depends where you are but i<m in scotland and the best spot for that sort of thing is a grade 3 called z bends on the river tummel whatch though cos it,s dam controlled and can flood real fast anyway keep practicing and happy paddling

I'm assuming you mean to get your boat vertical up against a rock/wall? Correct? That would be a splat, or have I got it wrong...

The post above yours Laddies was referring to a rock 360... I think

The rock 360 is a horizontal move performed on an exposed rock or one which is just under the surface and is a full rotation as the name implies.

The splat is basically a stern stall with the bottom of the boat touching the chosen rock. Depending on the current you can end up drifting alongside (still on your tail) if your balance is good. It's best to try splats on some still water in a spot you know is deep enough. Paddle normally up to it and then do a small double pump. By small I mean don't sink the nose too much. If you're boat is very small for you, then you can skip to the next step. I usually do a reverse double pump in anycase which moves us straight to the next step. If you did the d/pump on your right then your bow should be pointed more to the right so that your left side of the boat faces the rock more. Let's say 30 to 45 degrees off your initial path which should have been head on to the rock/wall. Then straight after your double pump (with the nose returning to the surface) put your paddle blade back into a position to sink your tail while you lean back a little and get into a stern stall. Your boat should now turn further to the right (if you pumped on the right) and as you pull the boat vertical the bottom of the boat is exactly flat on the rock or very nearby. It's hard to explain. I could show you in real life.. hehe. The timing is fairly easy but can become a little harder with faster moving water.

A word of warning. Only try this at a spot you know is deep enough and make sure your chosen rock is not undercut! This is just my view on how to do the move. Maybe my explanation is not that good. Anything unclear? I will make a video of this but expect it in like 3 or 4 months from now when I'm back in action... :-)

Try and look at how guys get into stern stalls on some videos..

Try this one and look at what he does in the beginning. I had the priviledge of paddling with Petteri recently and he's an awesome paddler and a great guy too. :bounce:
