NRS Sherpa - carry system 17 years 8 months ago #17040

Does anyone have any experience with the NRS Whitewater Kayak Sherpa?

I'm thinking of getting one. Or perhaps you can recommend something else? Thanks..

Hi,
Recently I made similar kayak backpacking from old rucksack. I've cut outer fabric, and left shoulder straps sewn to back panel. Then I sewn three straps to hold kayak, ended with plastic buckles. Everything cost nothing , only few hours learning sewing on machine.
Carrying kayak on your back is super comfy, now I would not imagine carrying on shoulder farther than 500m:grin:

Hi Marcin,

Shot for the response and for the picture too! Perhaps you can send me a more detailed picture of what you did, a close up? If not, no problem.

I have considered doing this and I have two hiking bags that I could potentially use but both are them are still reasonably new and it would be a crime to cut either one of them up! Maybe I can find a second hand one that someone is willing to sell. Otherwise I'll make another plan.

Thanks again, much appreciated. :bounce:

I have the NRS sherpa, but I haven't used it. My first impression is positive, but I think the boat might move a lot from side to side.
Since I have a small Dagger Nomad, I can't store the sherpa in it while paddling,.. or maybe if I really try to ram it in.

Why do you think it would move from side to side? Because the back is so narrow and unsupportive? :ask: ?? Or the strapping setup? Thanks :D

When I tried it on the kayak moved, rotated on my back.
I haven't tried well enough to say what the cause was. I guess it's just because the boat has a great leverage when it comes to rotating.

Re:NRS Sherpa - carry system 17 years 8 months ago #17278

Hmmm, that's quite interesting. I wonder if it's because you didn't set it up correctly or because of the design of the, how to say it, 'device'?

It's a real shame that you can't stow it in the back of your boat.. :| I can see why you've never used it then. :)

Re:NRS Sherpa - carry system 17 years 8 months ago #17279

Maybe it's caused by displacement hull of nomad, and narrow back pad. My self made packing is wider, I can jump, bend down with kayak (longest tried has 205 cm) on back, and it's don't move.

Re:NRS Sherpa - carry system 17 years 8 months ago #17281

I must say, the system that Marcin has made by himself does look pretty cool too. I was thinking along the lines of a large 50 to 90 litre hiking bag but of course a far smaller bag will do as it would also fit in better, once you need to get onto the water.

I have a bag at home I might have to sacrifice then.. I'll think about it though!

Thanks guys :notworthy:

In my system I used old bike backpack with 35 liters volume. Very important is a hip-strap, which allow the hips to balance some of the weight.

I made my first kayak carrying device of a old pack back. It was fairly ok, but it broke on the third day on our hike-in at Sarek. Since then I have bought the NRS sherpa, but still haven't had a change to try it out.

I'm hoping to have some use for the Sherpa in near future.

Well, I've just cut up an old bag and bought all the stuff I need... Let's see how it goes. I'll take my time and try and do a good job! hehe

Re:NRS Sherpa - carry system 17 years 8 months ago #17377

Right, so I made a carry system yesterday and to do the main work didn't take long. Maybe two to three hours. I still have to increase the padding on the shoulder and waist straps and make the odd modification but the donkey work has been done. I think I'll even write a small DIY article for Playak on how to make one. If there's a want/need for it? It's surprisingly easy! I really thought it would take me ages.

It feels fairly balanced, but not entirely. Maybe I will add a rope/webbing from the top grab handle that I can hold onto while walking to stabilise it. Anybody got have more experience with this? Getting the boat on and off can be interesting…

Cheers for now!

Thanks TV!

Yeah, I'll still have to beef up the straps a little and pad them some more for comfort. And then pray for some rain..

Until that happens... ;)

Cheers, AT

Re:NRS Sherpa - carry system 17 years 8 months ago #17474

It's really easy and pretty fun actually. I used a normal sewing machine and still managed just fine. Get the thickest needles you can and run the machine slowly. I never broke any needles... :roflol: I'm still going to modify it further and post up some more pics in the next two to three weeks..
:D

To attach the straps I used about 3 to 4 'strips' of sewing, going over the same spot 3 times in total. I used 25mm broad webbing (1 inch). Which is not to say you can't do it any other way. Just what I did

Re:NRS Sherpa - carry system 17 years 8 months ago #17486

Hi Adrian - last year on the Marsyandi the porters carried our kayaks with a remarkably simple system (see photo) - only problem is I'm not sure our 'western' neck muscles are up to this! Hope this helps.
Note that (hidden) the rope loops around the underside the cockpit rim or (in some modern creek boats) through the 2 clip-in points behind the cockpit.

Re:NRS Sherpa - carry system 17 years 7 months ago #18145

Right, I finally made up a little article on how to make a homemade kayak carrying system. It's by no means the ultimate guide and it will need some more work but here it is:

I hope it helps you a little should you decide to make something like this yourself! Have a great day. Comments, questions and suggestions are always appreciated.

Cheers

I did put my NRS Sherpa to the test when I stuffed my DragoRossi Squashtail with loads of stuff, it was close to 32 kg (65 pounds), and moved from Iceland to Basel, via London and Zurich. Fortunately I didn't have to carry it the whole way ;) but when I was carrying it I had no problems. I think the Sherpa totally worked and with out it I would have had to leave all my kayaking stuff behind when I moved.
