I'm looking for a new jacket. Right now I'm using a very leaky old jacket but that is OK for summer use, bu I want something more waterproof for chilly spring and autumn days. I've been looking at the Langer jackets, Smooth that has no latex and is very comfortable, and Shred that has normal, not so confy Latex cuffs and neck seal. My question is, will I need Latex? I guess neoprene could be water tight to begin with but start to leak after a while (a year or two). What is your advice, latex or not?

My first jacket was a double seal neoprine which worked good for 1/2 of the first season. Super comfortable but once it stratched, it was even more comfortable but it leaked.

I switched over to a jacket with latex seals. Way, better. My experience is that it is really only uncomfortable when it is brand new and when you are thinking about the neck seal. When I am actaully paddling, it never crosses my mind.

After about 3-4 days the latex stretches and it isn't to bad. The performance is so much better that it is worth any lack of comfort.

Latex isn't near as durable and it will need to replaced after a couple of seasons. That process isn't very difficult. There are companes that can replace it for you but you will also find lots of do-it-yourself tips online and in this forum that will allow you to do it for a fraction of the cost.

Cheers,

David H. Johnston

Thanks! It's what I expected. The salesman said something vague abut that the Neoprene gaskets will be tight until they stretch, guess it won't take too long...

Stretch your neck gasket on a pot or something a little bigger than your neck overnight for one or two nights. It does help.

I bought the Kokatat Rogue recently. Can't go wrong. I've never been happier or drier. The only downside is the price. But let me quote my favourite saying 'you pay peanuts, you get monkeys'. ;)

And hes a big monky so should now ;)

If you wait till the winter there a very cool new cag coming out with twin neo seals that has been tested to be completly dry,

2 different neo seals, one being posher and grippier, unlike the older rolled over neoprene. :) that is if you an wait till the Winter season kicks off and it is released to the Public.

I know it is on my short list for a new cag for the winter. Happy days

BINGO :) really sweet with a great cut, also if you ring up Nookie they will send you removeable pads, this way only the people who want them wil get them and the rest wont throw them in the bin ( more environementally friendly too!)

Happy days

Aha. I guess its a new version of the LTD, the 3-ply jacket? I've seen some 2 ply Nookie jackets and I am not very impressed by the durability. A guy at the club bought one this spring and now (August) the seam tapes have came loose in several places, not so watertight anymore. He does not paddle very much, just the weekends and maybe one week on the vacation.

latex is the only way to go if you want a dry ride

with your new drytop, put the latex seal on a pan or a big plastic bottle to stretch it and rube some 440 or silicone made for latex seal or personnal lube no vaseline it attack the latex.
