Pros and cons of off set 17 years 8 months ago #17280

I just ordered my new paddle from Werner its a cranked powerhouse with a custom off set of 20degrees. i like most people learnt on a 45degree but after trying a mates paddle set at 20 (which he hates) i found that some of the more Trick moves were easier on my off side. not to mention making my off side rolls bomb proof. but every time i mention what i am buying the only comment people make is about the feather and its all ways negitive stuff like my off side strokes will be worse off. i will strugle moving the blade through the water when upside down to set up for rolls and of course if i paddle into a head wind the blades will catch in the wind and fatige me. am i dealing with people who are just stuck in there ways or are they right. i know what works for me, thats why i bought it but am keen to hear other paddlers ideas on the subject. :blah:

I have found low feather angles (10-20 degrees) best for white water in general. I'm sure you will be happy with your new paddle.

Im paddling a zero feather now... quite frankly all the feather does is make it easier to paddle into the wind... it actually makes my off-side better as noow i am in a left control too... also when im underwater i (and maybe it is me) tend to roll my wrist to help cut my blade through the water to get it out faster... with a zero i dont catch like i did with a 45.

The 45 feather is great but old and to say that it is wrong to paddle a zero (or 20) is just old thinking imo... just like my job, 75 yrs of tradition unimpeded by progress :)

enjoy your paddle and who cares what other ppl think

Yeah you'll get used to the feather pretty quickly and you'll be just as competant and able than anyone else using standard 45 degree feather.
Haaaaave fun!

don't worry what other people think i have a 45 feathered and wish i had something in the lower range but i don't have any money and winter is coming so i have to start buying dry gear. So you made a right choice if it feels good for you then enjoy.

Thanks every one for your comments. people can't argue with expiriance hey. I have of course already made my perchass and am now just waiting for them to arive. it was dificult because as i have said befor i have only been paddling for just under a year and the people i have been paddling with are very experianced. so when i made a observaion that a low feather was better for me it was kind of like \"you haven't been doing this long son why dont you trust us\" Never mind the eye brow raise i got when i said i was going to get a paddle with a bent shaft. got to love it. Just like my kayak im always trying to rock the boat:dance:

If the innuits used long bladed narrow paddles, with No feather, it seems weird that it as taken so long for people to go back to zero? The eastern europeans added feather to help in head on winds etc, slalomists needed higher feather as not to knock gates.

Personally, I have been using a zero werner for about 4 years or so and its been great, but I recently changed the feather on my crank from 45 to around 15- 20 ish. not exact science re glued in position that felt right.

So I have come to the conclusion that it is down to personal preferance, but the less feather the easier it is on your wrists.

hope you enjoy your new paddle
