RESIZING a skirt that's too big for me???? 17 years 8 months ago #17366

Since I'm new to the sport and looking to buy a fully equipped boat, I often find some nice packages but, the skirt being a LARGE might be to big for me so, I was wondering if there are people here who have experienced downsizing a skirt with good results...?

By that, I mean making the area around the waist a bit tighter or smaller...

Thanks.

It shouldn't be that hard but the easiest way to achieve this is to get yourself another piece of neoprene (big enough to wrap around your waist and roughly as high as a tunnel on the spraydeck). Sew velcro on the ends so you can sort of \"shrink wrap\" the tunnel on your sprayskirt in it.

That way you don't have to work on the sprayskirt and you can use the neoprene wrap with other sprayskirts as well.

Just my 2 cents,

Michiel

Try asking for a different size? Most paddling shops are pretty helpful and its not much to ask.

michielv: That's a good idea, I'll give this a try first, before I try anything more permanent.

Has it ever been tested before????

I pretty sure most of them are very accommodating but, I'm mostly looking
at used boat from individuals more than commercial, you know? Taxes on top of the price and the fact that they're looking for profit.... makes me spend money that I could put on other equipment or afford better.

So when I'm find 1 kayak for sale that has everything with it and is of a particular model I'm contemplating, I just wish not to have to sell the skirt for a few bucks and have to buy an other one.

But thanks for the hint anyways, all help is well appreciated.

Thanks guys.

Hey Alex,
I use the neoprene wrap system on spray decks at work where we need to fit out different size kids who are sometimes so skinny nothing fits them. There is a spray deck manufacturer in Australia who makes his decks this way with the neoprene wrap sewn in and they work well for us.
The other option might be to take the deck to a wetsuit manufacturer (easy to find in Australia, maybe not in Canada) and have the deck altered. I did this with a deck I bought over the net that was too big. The alteration worked well, was seam sealed and pretty cost effective.

Hope that helps

Lots of junior paddlers I know do that all the time. They mostly play canoepolo so they roll a lot too. Works like a charm.

The best part is: you can't really make a mistake. Even if the wrap is a bit too tight or too loose: simply adjust it. You may have to move the velcro but it beats having a spraydeck that you made too small and you can't use it anymore.

WOW thanks a lot guys, that'exactly what I hoped to hear.

Skirt size won't be a issue any more, while I compare what's available for sale.
