Better grip on paddle 17 years 8 months ago #17368

What do you put in your paddle for a better grip?
And where i can acquire this.
Thanks!

In cold spring days I use wax SexWax , but in the summer sun it melts on shaft. There are different types of wax for different temperatures.

yeah, I use paddlewax in the winter when I wear gloves, but it sucks without them. What you can do is wrap electrical tape around where you grip the paddle then roughen it up with sandpaper. Works like a charm:yes:

i still don't understand why people keep using wax. mybe because of its sexy name, or because surfers use it, so it must be cool... thing is, it's ok to get some wax on your feet, but it sucks to get it all over your hands. you'll smear it into your face, hair and possibly over your glasses if you're wearing those.

also, imho it hardly improves grip.

best option i found so far is one layer of standard 2-sided carpet tape, and then wrap some thin tennis overgrip tape over that. since the overgrip tape is extremely grippy, it only works if you're using an offset of less than 45°, otherwise it will hurt your offside hand.

it's amazing how much power you'll save with this. you can hold the paddle losely with 3 fingers and still do the same stuff you would normally do with 5 fingers and a firm squeeze.

also, it gives the paddle a warm feeling, something that wax doesn't do.

people have been laughing at me ever since i started using this trick 8 years ago, but whoever tries my paddle loves it... really, give it a try and then judge :)

J,
You've probably used too much when you've tried it. I use just a little bit to make it a bit more tacky. It works like a charm. I use it in the winter when I need my gloves to stick to the paddle better. It works great and is very light weight. I bought a light paddle and tape adds weight for no reason. Plus, I like the sexy smell!

Peace,
Boe

To each their own preferences!

I rarely use anything in the summer, but in the winter, I like to add a layer or three of vet wrap over a popsicle stick under my pogies for a cushiony feel that is also sort of grabby. A short piece of surgical tape holds it in place just fine. Works fine with numbing hands and also helps insulate the carbon shaft.

I've never been one to like waxes - won't even use chap stick when I probably ought to. Tried vasoline in my beard to keep it from freezing in the 1970's and never did that again. Hell to wash out if you have no hot water, and it didn't stop the freezing, just made it easier to crunch the ice out. Misting of olive oil worked better. Bad when you want to quickly change into warm dry clothes and your beard is frozen to the front of your life vest. Saw friend's girlfriend chip two inches off friend's beard once using an ice pick trying to losen up a beard. They decided to wait longer for natural melting or hot water when they saw how close things were to the jugular. Wound up using my thermos of hot tea on his beard and the wetsuit zippers which were also frozen shut. Friend shaved shortly after that. Girlfriend was inpatient with his holding up group from going out to eat in nice warm restaurant after long day on river.

The key to a good grip is making sure the wax fits the sport application. Paddle wax should be formulated to the water temp and provide tackiness during a single float session. Unlike surf wax, which generally can last a season, paddle wax should be applied at the beginning of your float.
A secondary consideration are the ingredients. Surf wax is notorious for containing petroleum-based products. Try www.paddlewax.com for a natural alternative. Our product is guaranteed.

BTW: SUP paddlers love our warm wax in tropical temps.
