back deck roll 17 years 7 months ago #17583

Im wondering when doing a back deck roll...the paddle goes from the stern to the bow...is it normal then to sometimes bring the paddle towards the stern of the boat a little to finish the roll off????

If its not...any tips as to why im not coming up with just the stern to bow movement?

cheers fran.

When I finish my back deck roll I'm up when the padel reaches half way from stern to bow.
I do it from a high brace like a normal roll.
Some people can do it from a low brace but I haven't mastered that yet.

Try changing your set-up position... 17 years 7 months ago #17607

As weird as it sounds the set-up position for this roll is not much different than
the set-up for any other roll. Put the power face of your blade in at your feet with your wrists cocked backward, flip the kayak over while beginning to make a wide arc from bow -stern-bow. You will need to flip the boat over the planted paddle and you will find that the paddle actually moves much less than the boat does.

Here is a video demonstration: (#4)

I hope this helps! Good luck !

Thanks for the link, it's exactly what I'm looking for. I've been wanting to learn the specifics of the backdeck/rodeo roll, but wasn't sure. I've been doing more of a beckdeck sweep roll

Personally I need so add a little low brace at the end to keep from flipping back over.:naughty: I guess it is all down to the hip-snap and paddle placement. Practice is the best way I guess. As for getting rid of habits... Methinks I also need help in that department!

to get a solid fonish, end your roll leaning forward to your front deck hard and sweeping towards your toes.
