I recently bought this vest:

www.astralbuoyancy.com/02/Aquavest300.php

It's really great. Good flotation. Doesn't hinder my movement. Large pocket to stow all your stuff. There is an abseiling loop you can use. Naturally a chest harness. The hand warming area is a nice touch too - it actually works.

I use the same vest for every type of paddling I do. I had two other Palm vests and I cannot complain at all either. Both of them have lasted me very well and the quality is on a par with the Astral vests. The foam Astral uses is PVC free so it't enviromentally friendly.

Try one on and have a look at the features and quality. You'll be impressed I'm sure. Good luck Alex and have fun! :roflol:

Thanks Chris. It's an awesome vest, no doubt about it. That little pocket is pretty handy..

I use a Yak Descent for river running and a Kokatat Orbit Tour for everything else.

The Orbit Tour is pretty amazing; 70N buoyancy and you really can't even feel that it's there. The Descent is also really good. The only flaw I've found is that it's maybe a little bulky, but that said it's made of two very thick foam panels, so the bulk goes out rather than being spread over your torso, so it doesn't hinder movement much. It's also pretty cheap for what you get.

Others river-runners that I've heard great things about would be the Astral Aquavest, HF Serpent and Palm Extrem II.

Cheers,
Ross

I will have to agree with Astral 300, very nice pfd. I also look forward to see the new Astral Green or what ever it will be called.
