Hi all. I have very fair skin and am already noticing sun damage from kayaking in short sleeve rashguards. But, most of the time I am kayaking in Florida and I don't want to wear a thick long-sleeved rashguard. I need something that will protect my skin without being warm, just a layer to block the sun. I'm going to Ecuador to paddle in January and would like to get a long sleeve top before heading down. Right now it's cold enough in Florida that I'm using the long sleeve tops I have for late fall and early spring kayaking on the Nantahala (brrrrrr). I would be most grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks!
Nicole

I paddled for 3 years in any one of the following:
- a rashie - just a lightweight one that people wear here in oz at the beach - it's made out of the same stuff that swim suits are made out of, but it's longsleeved. I paid less than $20 for it
- a thermal top - as in a polypropelene thermal top
- an old longsleeved white cotton business shirt - if it's really hot, they're great - they're cheap and wonderfully cool, and all the guys look fabulous in them! You've just got to make sure that it's seriously hot where you're paddling, cause if it get's cold, or you're forced to bivvy (is there a paddling term for bivvy?) you'll end up hypothermic.

It's funny - that's what most people in central to northern Australia paddle in - I didn't see a CAG til I got to Penrith!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I just ordered a Dakine long-sleeve rashguard from essentialsurf.com. Once I've had a chance to give it a go, I'll let y'all know if it was worth my $24.00. Thanks again!

Hi there,

There are some cold water rivers in Ecuador by the way! I took a Dry cag (and wore it) for all the sections on the Quios near Baeza. This in the mountain range that you go over to get to Tena. I also found there was more creeking than playboating (even though I took my playboat and had a great time).

Have a nice trip,

Neil

While in Ecuador I did get the chance to test out my new rashguard. It was exactly what I needed. Sunblock hasn't been enough to protect my skin from damage even with reapplication, so I really needed a long sleeve top that I could wear even on a warm river on the hottest July day. This one is going to do the trip. It's a thin material with a good fit and very breatheable. I didn't get overheated and my arms stayed out of the sun! I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a lightweight, long-sleeved rash guard.
