yeah, there are some tricks but they kind of depend on what your spot is like. Using a rudder can somewhat help, but you can't go as big with one. It just takes practice to be able to get straight on the pile and just drive in without a paddle stroke to be able to consitently get big loops.

-Sometimes it helps to just go straight for a loop as soon as you enter the hole.
-use a rudder and hold it as you go for the loop.
-Do a flat spin and immediatly hit a loop. I like this one, because a flatspin usually sets you right up in the sweet spot of the hole and about 3/4 of the way up the foam pile.
-sometimes being on the top of the foam pile is not necessarily the best spot. It gives you two much speed and may cause you to bury your bow too soon.
- Just keep and active blade, maybe your stroke that you are planting the bow in with to keep your boat in right.
-force down with your toes and hold your abs tight.

The loop is a trick that can be hit from time to time by many, but it takes a lot more skill to be able to hit in a lot of different spots and consitently get air. Try a lot techniques and develop a quiver of techniques that you experiment with. Right now, I like just holding my paddle right in front of me and using my body to throw in my bow. I seem to be able to jump up quickest that way.

I've only started freestyle in last 3mths or so. The loop is something I've been throwing consistently and I find the easiest way is as nathan said to go for the loop as soon as you enter the hole. I also find it easier to position the bow more flat (therefore not rotate side on) if I just put in some small back strokes as I'm dropping in so that I reduce speed. Then I can hit the sweet spot direct 9 times out of 10 and stay heaps straighter. It's a little different with every hole though so what worked on one hole won't necessarily work at others so the best advice is to try try try again until you learn the intricacy's of a particular hole.

But most important thing is just keep trying and have fun
