PFD??HELP?? 17 years 7 months ago #18105

I received and returned an Astral Newton, Freestyle PFD. The fit was quite loose on me. The shoulder straps were non-adjustable and too loose. I need a good playboating PFD that I can also run solid class IV. The problem is that I don't like the Stohlquist Brik. I want a PFD that covers a bit more of my spine in the back and is not too bulky for playboating.

So... I was looking at the Astral Aquavest 200 and I think it will work better. I'm just a bit worried that the floatation in the front may be a bit too thick and a bit too thick along the sides. I have a happy thruster and I don't want the PFD to stick out too far from my trunk and keep me from leaning forward for agressive moves.

The Aquavest 300 (rescue PFD) looks alright. I'm gonna go try one on for size tomorrow.

Any suggestions???

Cheers,
Boe (Whitewaterules)

It sounds like you want the Astral 300R. It's their first vest and the things is super comfortable for both playboating and creeking. It's got as much flotation and protection as any other PFD, but it's design to feel like a playvest. I usually wear it like a creekvest - leave the safety belt and tow tether on - all the time, and then take it off when I'm doing some park and play.

You should check out the 300R, it sounds exactly like what you're looking for. peace

I don't like the Astral Aquavest 300. It rides to low for my liking. I'm hoping the Astral Aquavest 200 does not ride quite so low, anyone have any idea?

Peace,

Wow, that's the first time I've ever heard anybody say that a lifejacket rides to low. All 300's have a pull tab in the back of the lifjacket - usually they get pushed up in between the two layers of foam - and you can really crank down on the shoulder strap to tighten the vest. If that doesn't satisfy you then you can always wait a little bit because Astral is coming out with a creeking version of Newton that is beefed up to include more padding, thicker shoulder straps, and reinforced webbing.

Hope that helps,
Karl

Stohlquist Brik. I went with the Brik... it sitts a bit higher on the torso. We'll see how it goes.
