Depends, some people easily get water up their nose and panick when that happens, for those people a noseclip helps. I never wear them.

They won't make you hold your breath longer, breathing exercises and improved water confidence will do that. I do know of couple of people who use them when playboating... just don't come to depend on them or you'l swim at the nastyest times.

When playing I always wear noseclips. Simply because cold water (or even warmer) gets me infections and lots of nose-trouble. For that same reason I always wear earplugs (custom made to measure). I've paddled for years without but when playing (and being upside down a lot) the ear plugs and nose clips now prevent me from a lot of ear and sinus troubles.

Whereas in the past my collegues could always tell when I had been playing or kayak surfing because I sounded like a very bad case of flue :D

You can always just let the water go up your nose, but personally having a night of blocked sinuses was never my thing :frustrated:

I love my smiley nose clips. I use them when playing and in white water.

As you do not have to worry about keeping from snorting water if you are flipped, you have more time to concentrate on getting back up lol.

However, after a day long play-sesh yesterday, I now have a nice red mark on either side of my nose. Smiley nose clips are also make you soft, so if you are ever caught without them you WILL be in for a nasty shock!

Smileys are great. Picked me up a pair the other day and they do stop water going in your nose. Which has left me with a near-permanent cold for abou 8 weeks now.

So they are handy if you have a sensitive nose.

Yep, but they wear out pretty quickly. I need at least one pair per season, usually two.

Then again, they're cheap enough to make good birthday and christmas presents so I always know what to ask from my cousins ;)

Yeah, the little bubbles in the rubber tend to pop, making them uncomfortable and hard to keep on.

I can't live without them. If I think there's even a remote change I will capsize or go deep in a rapid I will always wear the nose plug. Last weekend I forgot my nose plug for a play session at Neitikoski and I can tell you I was not a happy paddler.

I am sure it is a climate thing.

In a nice warm country a bit of water up your nose is fine providing you aren't prone to infection, whereas in places like Finland where water must be FREEEEZING it must be pretty important, unless you Nords are immune to that kinda thing :roflol:

I went to the Nene whitewater center last year and it was snowing. I'm telling ya, I'd have died without some smileys!

I never wear them either. I've always been comfortable in water without them.

Well maybe. When I paddled in Scandinavia I found the water cold but still it didn't bother my nose at all. I really don't mind water up my nose. It very rarely gets flushed with water anyway. :roflol: :roflol: :roflol: I guess I've been in water all my life in some way or another and maybe subconsciously I breathe out slowly through my nose. When I'm playing though I sometimes get a blast.. but it's nothing for me.

I paddle with a couple of people here in South Africa that do actually wear nose clips and it almost seems that if you clip it onto your nose before a rapid it kind of makes it feel like you aren't confident in making it. Sometimes they put it on and sometimes not, depending on the rapid. It kind of jinxes it. Or? I wouldn't actually know because I never wear a plug. I'm just thinking out aloud

Has anyone ever worn those HUGE white ones with the springy ridge? I wore them and they were a fail.

I didn't say it makes someone look less confident. I said I would think that subconsciously it might make that person feel less confident just by doing that. Just my :2cents: use it, don't use it. :)

Yeah I don't use them either. I think having something pinching your nose is more annoying than an occasional bit of water up there. Also having to put it on/off all the time would be a pain in the arse.

I'm with Adrian, just gives you another thing to fiddle around with and make you nervous at the top of a big rapid.

Re:nose clips 17 years 6 months ago #18812

If you are used to using a nose plug it's not really fidding, it's more of part of the ritual, most boaters seem to have somethnigs they do everytime.

Here in the states, just read in the paper of 6 people from Arizona, Texas and Florida who died this year from an ameiba that entered the nose while they were swimming in shallow, warm water. It attacked their brains and all died within 2 weeks, NO cure. The article says this thing lives in most of the shallow warm waters of the world.

hmmm

Re:nose clips 17 years 6 months ago #18813

Well Im just straight up strange then...

I have them and dont use them until Im playboating but for straight up river running and the like I dont use them... I dont like the way they feel as I like to breathe via my nose. Actually I pull them off as soon as Im loose from the hole/wave then put them back as I pull out into the feature

AM I the only 1 with this ritual?

I can't stand them, they hurt. Plus they don't look good, obviously the most important consideration :roflol:

For playboating it's just the matter of comfortability, but I must admit that for running rivers it's a bit more like ritual. Once I have sat in my boat after scouting putting my nose plugs on is the last step after I feel like I'm ready to stomp the drop. So if nothing else the wearing of nose plug gives me more confidence as I feel ready and fully equipped to run the rapid.

In other news, my smileys broked today :(

So some of you are happy with the water going up your nose? Do you kinda sneeze it out when you come up?

Re:nose clips 17 years 6 months ago #18831

If I dont have them on when I go over I (for lack of a better word) lock off my nose... Cant really explain how I do it other than to say that I hold air up there and once I roll back I blow out the water

I never used them until this year and its only for playboating so I still keep honest running rivers

I do the exact same..

Tuomas: what you said makes a lot of sense. I see now that it becomes a ritual and not what I had guessed it might be. I guess it's different for everybody though.. ;)

Re:nose clips 17 years 6 months ago #18834

With Adrian on this one, they become a crutch. Use one because I genuinely cant stand water up me nose, problem is now if I dont have one it can really mess up my paddling day, just got used to it I guess. Seems a 50% split with people I paddle with some do some dont, wonder if some people just simply can not block their nose.

No jokes about big nose

Re:nose clips 17 years 6 months ago #18836

Ok so this is getting a little disgusting but I often snort water up my nose to clear it out. When the air is dry and dusty (or just dusty) this really works well for me  And I do this in my day to day life when I feel the need... :skull:

So water up your nose is not such a bad thing, but you have to control how far it goes up. Once high up in the nasal passages it can make your face feel stuffy.

Have you read a book by Loel Collins called \" Kayak Rolling \" ( the black art demystified )? He describes a very simple technique of very gently breathing out through your nostrils when submerged. He reckons that you're probably under the water for less than 10 secs while rolling; more than adequate for an average breath hold. This prevents water going up your nose & the sometimes coughing fit that follows it.

Or you can be really weird & practice this technique in the bath or face down in a sink of water. The only problem I had was trying to get my boat in the bath!

Alternatively the book is available on WWW.amazon.co.uk.
