Hello everybody,

How does one run a rock garden ?

I'm an intermediate paddler quite comfortable in class 3-4 rapids, but I'm having difficulties with rock gardens, things seem to happen faster than what I can manage.

What are your strategies / plans / tricks ?

Everybody's opinion is welcome :-)

Thanks !

My approch is to slow it way down by low bracing instead of paddling until you really need to. You would be amazed at the long complex rapids you can run without ever taking a forward storke except to make a correction. I break down the rapid into sections with specific moves that end where I can eddy out and start the next series. Every eddy I hit slows the pace. I also use a ferry position to slow things down and think about the next move if to eddy is present but in a rock garden they are usually in abundance. Always scout what you can't see.

I am a commited ELF boater (extra low flow) and this is what works for me. I also practice broching off rocks and a good pair of elbow pads (mountain bike type) works wonders.

Hope this helps.
