Video: Rolling with Exchile - 4 - Rodeo Back Deck

Better keep your paddle low, below your chin, not above your head as shown in the video.
Prevent shoulder injuries, it's bad doing moves putting your paddle above your head and then putting weight on the blade.

better look at the video of the back deck roll by Bas de Man:

Alright but how oh how the hell do you finish this roll off... I get half way up and never finish. I end up having to set up normal and go from there... really buggs me

It sounds like you are running out of space to move the paddle. This means you are only part way up before you run out of purchase for your paddle. The natural instinct is then to slice the paddle in the other (normal) direction. The solution to to this is to put your right-hand paddle blade in toward your LEFT FOOT. As soon as your blade hits the water begin flipping the kayak over your body. When done correctly you will have plenty of room. You also should feel no stress on your shoulders. Review the videos carefully as all the moves in this roll are important and subtle.

Good Luck,

Try starting your hip flick much earlier - around when you r on the back deck and almost touching it with your head. In this way this roll is very similar to a hand roll that u start of the back deck (and may be finish on it) :D
Your kayak should actually be almost up-right while u r still lying back. The sweep is just to bring your weight on top of it.

Well the roll that wwdemon describes will indeed work and can be quite simple, but many argue that you are on the back deck (potentially unstable) when you come up.

I could find factors to criticize any of the rolls if I wanted to. I have heard it all. However I am agnostic.........any of these rolls will work and work very well if done correctly. Any of them could hurt a shoulder joint if done incorrectly.
Anytime you are underwater you Could be smacked by the bottom. The goal is to get uprght as quick as possilbe in a elegant non taxing way.

Some are a little faster to learn.
Others require a little more flexibility.
But for the normal healthy person any of them will work and work well.

You need to decide which roll is for you and stick with it.

This is what often happens someone starts learning a roll and it is not yet working for them and someone else comes and gives advice on the roll they are familiar with. Suddenly you are being taught two different things and you are confused.

You need to have faith in your instructor and the roll that they are teaching.
There are distinctly different rolls that have certain common threads but do not mix them in the beginning.

Once you have determined what is your path go for it like a laser. It is not that hard to get your body to go through defined motions. Defining it so you understand it is the trick.

If you are going to listen to someone else other than your principle advisor make sure they at least know which roll you are working on.

Thanks for your help..both of you

Where I tend to get stuck is not in getting my paddle free but just not pressing all the way out. It feels like I am getting to around 90 deg then i end back upside down

I should add that my standard sweep roll is near bombproof and I do understand the concept of the BD roll, just cant seem to really do it. I have tried to start from many different positions too, Usually I start the way that EJ teached in Playboating basics. I have also tied hanging out for a second to set up then attempting. I have also not been able to get it doing the reverse sweep roll (which i used to be able to do)...

When is the right time to hip snap? As I think that is part of the problem

THanks again

Sorry if I didn't explain well...
My point was to get the hip flick working very early - when u r still on the BD. Once u do that - u can sweep forward with the body & the blade - to come up in full on front agressive position. :roflol:
One way to practice the timing of the hip flick however - is to stay on the BD - easier to concentrate on the movement. Enjoy  .

I found what helped me was getting extra body movement/leading with head.

I was trying to learn it and some nice paddler at Penrith told me I Should try to kiss the back of my boat while doing it and for some reason when i do that i come up heaps earlier and can finish with my body coming forward. give it a try if you haven't already... can't hurt.

Hope this helped some.
