what's wrong with my double pump 17 years 3 months ago #20063

Hey,

Been stuck at this point of my double pump for a while now, and have just finally managed to get some footage...

I'm always going over my head aswell as sideways...

Looking at the video, looks like i'm leaning on the right paddle blade and it's pulling me back where i came from and over... Right? Especially in the first attempt - almost looks like the right blade pulls me back around and down - boat turns around...

The second attempt it what I tend to do 90% of the time, simply end up on my head...

How do i stop this happening?!! bear in mind ive got this technique (albeit bad) in my head now so will be hard to make myself do something different!!

I've put a slowed down version of the video on YouTube... - hopefully slower video will be easier to see what's going on...

Also direct links to video below coz YouTube doesn't seem to be working properly at the moment, stopping half way thru video...

Slow Speed:

Normal Speed Video

Any help would be most appreciated :)

I've been reading the post of yours on a bad workman blames his tools. Your boat and paddle are fine and looking at the video you will get the flat water cartwheel no problems.

You start the double pump fine but as soon as the tail goes up you seem to be throwing your body back down again and this stops the rotation.

As the tail lifts up, your head is looking down at the water. As it gets to just before vertical, turn your head so that you're looking over your right shoulder and keep your rotation to your left side. Think of it as leaning down on your left side while turning your head to the right. This keeps the rotation going and is an important step to progressing further with the move. Once you've done that, you'll figure out what to do with your paddle etc.

Your head and where it's facing is critical in many play boating and river running moves. Actually, every dynamic sport. You always want to be facing the direction of where you want to be going.

Just my 2 cents. If you have any further questions, give me a shout.

(I'll put together a small video clip that will help you. I found it helped me to watch other people and what they were doing. What's your e-mail address? Otherwise I might put in up on Playak.tv but I still find that it is extremely slow compared to other video sites. Any tips Jeroen?)

Right, here's the video I put together:
playak.tv/view_video.php?viewkey=a85d6d06f1fdd4475dac

Watch my head carefully. No, not the bald patch at the back, but where I'm looking! :roflol: hehehe. Where the head looks, the body follows.

cheers heaps Adrian - that helps loads, and does make perfect sense - i knew i had my head in the wrong place but couldn't figure out what i should do with it...!

U really snap it around as soon as u start getting vertical hey -- i was trying to wait until i was vertical before doing this next part, so too late and yeah, pulling myself back down again...

<Off to find some flatwater....>

Cheers again for ur help and taking the time to put that video up

Rob

No problem Rob. Glad it helped! Good luck.

I'm sure you'll be posting a video of yourself cracking out a few ends in the next while. Looking forward to it. Remember, it's also about having fun so don't beat yourself up about it if you don't get it right away. Lots of practise.. :-)

I could explain u what's going on if u speak russian, But sure u don't. So I going 2 try but not sure that u will understand. Your pump is good enough 2 stay on bow, but u stopping your movement in moment before u make it. First of all it's not physical and technical problem, it's psycology, I cannot match words 2 explain u why, but some times it happens. Acually u have enough techniqs and physics 2 make it but u can not. Why? U sympy cannot step over edge and thats why u stuck in moment b4 success. The easest way 2 solve your problem - is using help of water. Try 2 make your cartwheel in the eddys edge where stream meets standing water. U don't need 2 have very fast stream, but not very slowly. So if have such place - great! Start make you double pump from eddy, heading up 2 the stream almoust perralel the eddys edge and putting your bow in stream. Make it with your head to the stream.
Be ready first 10-30 tries u will not can understand when 2 start double pump, so count your tries.

Anyway keep on trainings your in one small step from success.
