Below is an email I sent to Brock Royer of Wave Dog Paddles after my first three days using the Golden. I paddle in the Columbia River Gorge (on the border between OR and WA.) This area is notorious for sweet waterfalls (paddles break a lot) and a lot of rocks (boats and paddles take a beating.) I had my Golden into the local shop, the Kayak Shed, and the employee couldn't believe I had already paddled with it multiple times, it looked brand new after three great runs down a local favorite, Green Truss of the White Salmon, as well as a dawn run down a notorious boat beater called Hagen Creek. I am now a Sales Agent with WD. There's one reason for this, WD is making the best paddle in the world. I hate to be out and putting gear to the test only to have it fail on me, leaving me hanging, stranded, pissed. I broke my AT Flexi on a beautiful 30+ footer that really pounded into the landing pool. As AT is currently not making that paddle bc the mold broke (that's what I heard last summer) I started searching for something else (although I loved that AT simply because of that flex.) I also wanted to run that drop next time and have a complete paddle at the bottom, not a broken one. I ran the drop perfectly, but the AT snapped like a twig (and not at the joint, it just snapped right through the shaft), which I understand, it's a lot of pressure. Shortly after this I read the WD review in Paddler magazine and immediately contacted Brock to find out more. What I have since learned is attested to below, this is an amazing piece of equipment!
Email to Brock and the boys at WD:
THANKS. This paddle is sick! I love it. The shaft is perfect, the blades are very powerful, and the flex, OH THE FLEX, it's more than anything I've ever felt, and with no flutter!!! My boofs have more power than ever, helping to keep me out of the holes! This is a truly sick piece of gear you all have built. I'm proud to represent it and have been telling everybody how much I love it. The blade coating is bomber and the extra weight doesn't bother me one bit. I also love the aggressive angle of the bent shaft. I always use to get blisters with the AT shafts, now, I haven't seen a blister after three days in a row! (I use to wear gloves to prevent the blisters, but I wore through them, now I don't even bring them along as there's no need.) It is seriously my favorite piece of gear and THE BEST PADDLE I've ever used! Thanks a million, tell the guys in the shop thanks as well. Oh ya, thanks also for being conscious of the $$$. This is the least expensive of the top of the line paddles. YEAH!!!
Needless to say I think everyone's next paddle should be a WD. I have yet to test it on some big rompin' stompin' drops as I'm out of commission for a month. But as soon as I'm back I'll be posting how it holds up after pencilling some bigger drops. I'm not suggesting WD because I'm affiliated with them, I'm affiliated with them because they're the best and I can't imagine EVER paddling with a different paddle. I was just pestering them about coming out with break down bc I want to carry one in my boat for when my friends who still paddle ATs break their paddles; I'll be waiting with the Savior. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at my email that is listed in my profile. I have paddles that you can demo if you're in my area and want to boat (Columbia River Gorge, think, Hood River, Portland, etc.)
Take Care
